We pay close attention to DxOMark scores for in-depth analysis of the camera capabilities so why not displays? OnePlus have spent close to 100 million RMB (AU$20 million) on R&D for their display in the upcoming OnePlus 7 Pro so it seems prudent to check with the experts at DisplayMate whether that money has been well spent.
Last night DisplayMate sent out a teaser Tweet stating that the display on the OnePlus 7 Pro received the highest possible rating for a smartphone display — A+. The Samsung-made Optic AMOLED display is, according to OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, the best you will have ever seen. If that is the case it is going to have to be amazingly good considering how good the Samsung displays are in their Galaxy S10 smartphones.

Other notable phones who have also received the A+ rating from DisplayMate are the Samsung Galaxy S10, iPhone XS Max and the Google Pixel 3 XL. It seems that DisplayMate are going to have to start coming up with a new grading system to separate these top phones — there can be only one! The final OnePlus 7 Pro display rating from DisplayMate will be published on April 14, the day it is launched.
The display is expected to be a curved 6.6inch 2K OLED display from Samsung which Pete Lau says is a ‘breakthrough’ display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. OnePlus have revealed that their new display will offer better colour accuracy, brightness, contrast and pixel density. It will carry the Safety for Eyes certification as well which is its ability to filter blue light.
If all this is really true and not just marketing hype then OnePlus could well and truly join the upper echelons of high end smartphone manufacturers. All eyes will be on that rear triple camera and whether it can produce results equivalent or better than the others such as the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and the Huawei P30 (and P20) Pro. To truly match it with the top notch flagships this is something they need to conquer.
They have apparently conquered the display though, hopefully they have the camera too. Hopefully their success results in them expanding to Australia. Fingers crossed.
