While other vendors figure out how to make a foldable phone work properly, LG went in a slightly different direction this year, showing off the LG V50 ThinQ with a dual display instead.
While technically a foldable – the second display fits on the phone like a clip-on device and folds over the phone when closed – it’s not quite, and while the idea has some merit, LG’s implementation had relatively less in the V50 ThinQ.
The idea isn’t dead though, as there are rumours this week that LG will return to MWC 2020 with a new dual-screen smartphone in the V60 ThinQ.
The rumours don’t suggest much of a feature bump over the 2019 model, though. Instead of a properly foldable design, LG’s V60 ThinQ will feature the same clip-on dual-screen technology, according to the Korea Herald. With a continued focus on 5G, the V60 ThinQ will feature a re-designed second display with a better folding mechanism to make it more natural and easier to use.
As to what’s inside? There’s no information yet, but you can expect incremental improvements over this year’s V50 ThinQ specs which were – mostly – on the money. From my review, the only things that needed real improvement were battery life and software – LG got the internals right, but the unoptimised software and poor battery life (not to mention the horrible way the software used the second display) really left an unpleasant aftertaste.
As MWC approaches – just shy of two months away now – no doubt we’ll find out more about what LG has been working on.
I’m not sure why you don’t like the software or the battery life. I get 8 to 10 hours of screen on time. Have now updated to the Android 10 Beta and my battery life has been even better. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the software or the battery life on the v50.
