A few weeks ago XDA Developers unearthed the names of three possible Google Pixel 4a codenames in the AOSP dump from the Pixel 4 hardware. At that stage they were able to determine the codenames and the SoC they each ran but were unsure which codename belonged to which device. Now they are, for one at least.

Overnight they once again discovered that one of the codenames, “sunfish”, belongs to the Pixel 4a. The Pixel 4a will thus be running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 CPU and thus will not have 5G connectivity. The Pixel 4a is also expected to have a 5.7-5.8-inch hole punch display, headphone jack, rear fingerprint scanner and single lens rear camera.

XDA are not saying where or how they came across this information as “the source we inspected contains a lot of other useful information that I would rather not lose access to”. When they shared the last piece of information they lost access to it.

There is no information regarding the other two codenames, the Redfin and Bramble, both based on the 5G-integrated Snapdragon 765. Given that there has been no mention of a Pixel 4a XL codename other than these two we suspect that one of these will be the Pixel 4a XL, making it a 5G-capable device.

It is very early in the year to be learning this and with the Pixel 4a line set to launch at Google I/O again this year we have until May 12 to learn more — and you can be sure that more information will follow.
