After quitting OnePlus the enigmatic Carl Pei launched his own tech start-up ‘Nothing’, which is a great name for it because that’s exactly what we know about Pei’s plans. Today reports are emerging that Pei has now purchased the failed smart brand Essential following its rapid decline following the founder’s disgrace following sexual misconduct allegations.

With Essential closing in early 2020, it’s unclear exactly what is left to purchase. The Brand is hardly valuable, there are no employees left to acquihire so this leaves us wondering if there Essential has intellectual property that Nothing needs?

Essential certainly launched with a massive public-facing strategy claiming to be launching not only smartphones abut an entirely new take on the Smart home, however, Essential released nothing (let that pun wash over you) in the IoT/ Smart Home space. We will wait to see if anything Material cones out of this Nothing Essential news.

Assuming something comes out of Nothing we hope that Carl Pei doesn’t ignore the Australian Market this time, with the One Plus line only legitimately retailing one device in Australia we’re essentially feeling left out in the cold.
