Aldi 13th July
Aldi has not had a Smartphone in stock since the launch of their Aldi Mobile service back in March, when from all accounts it sold out; with many potential customers missing out on what seems to have been a limited run. Aldi advised that the original Bauhn Smartphone they stocked was an inital one-off ‘Special Buy’ which would only be available until sold out. The latest Aldi catalogue however shows a new Medion branded Smartphone to go on-sale from next Saturday the 13th of July, it also shows a repeat of the 3G enabled Bauhn 10″ tablet that went on-sale in early June.

The latest Aldi ‘Special Buy’ is for a Medion branded Smartphone which will sell for $149. It runs Android 4.1 on a Dual-Core 1GHz CPU has a 4″ WVGA(800×480) screen and comes in a dual-SIM format. It’s pre-loaded with some Apps straight off the bat, including Documents to Go, MEDION GoPal Outdoor App – a navigation app aimed at hikers, climbers, geocachers and cyclists – and a 30 day trial of Kaspersky Mobile Security, the Phone also includes Google Play access.

The Bauhn WL-101QGC was previously on-sale as an Aldi ‘Special Buy’ back in early June, but in what seemed to be a first for an Android tablet at Aldi, did not seem to do that well. I personally saw left over stock at two stores a week after the promotion began. The tablet itself is fairly decent at the $249 price point, especially considering the 3G radio included.

Full Specs, Bauhn WL-101QGC :

  • 10.1″ 1280 x 800 Resolution IPS Display
  • QualComm MSM8225Q Quad Core 1.2Ghz
  • 1GB DDR RAM
  • 4 GB on-board storage + 16GB Micro SD Card included
  • 5.0MP Auto Focus Rear Camera and 0.3MP Front facing Camera
  • WiFi: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n,Bluetooth: 3.0, GPS,
  • 3G: WCDMA 850 / 2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900
  • Android 4.1 Jellybean
  • 6000mAh Li-Polymer Battery

Aldi will again be selling an accessory pack for the Bauhn tablet, which they also sold back in June. The tablet accessory pack includes a case, earphones, car charger and USB to DC cable for $19.99.

Both the Medion Smartphone and the Bauhn 3G tablet come with a One Year warranty as well as a 60 Day money back guarantee. They go on-sale next Saturday the 13th of July, check your local store for opening times.

Will you be getting either of these?

How do you edit your contacts on the aldi smart phone. I can add but not edit. Everyone says there is dots at the top but I cannot see any.

    Hi Helen,
You may need to go open the contact before the 3 dots option appears. Alternatively try a long press on the contact and see if a menu appears.

The phone is hopeless. I was upgrading an Alcatel 918D in which I was using a Telstra phone sim for phone & messaging and a Virgin sim (from a datastick) for data only. My Alcatel picked up 4 bars of Telstra and 3 of Virgin (Optus network) – I’m in a fringe area. The Medion picked up 3 bars of Telstra and 1 of Virgin – not enough to even google with. Needless to say Aldi smartphone is going back and I’ll stay with my Alcatel. V. Disappointed. 🙁

I bought the 4″ phone as well and found the sound quality is very poor. Sound of ring tone way too quiet, so as a phone, it fails miserably. The android side is fine but as this is a phone first it has to go back. (unless someone out there has a fix for ringtone and sound problem?

Does anyone else find the medlon ph has poor sound. Doesn’t ring loud. And hard to hear voice calls. Even on speaker ph I had trouble hearing person on otherline over my kids. I had to hop out of my car to finish call.

I have a Aldi Bauhn 4.5″ smartphone & I am very happy. Just 2 questions for owners, when texting – how do you make the phone not click when inputting letters / numbers. I have found I have to put the phone on silent, is there another solution. Also what silicone or hard cover can I buy that will fit my phone? Thanks for you help. My email is surfcoastsurfer@hot mail.com

Go to settings-sound-touch sounds and untick the box.

I don’t ask much of a phone. Apart for taking and making calls and texts, I only want it to play my MP3 sound bites for the various alarms, ring tones and calendar events built in. This one is not much of a ‘smartphone’ I’m afraid – it is incapable of doing this. Bought one today and it’s going back tomorrow.

A bargain – just lacks in the looks dept that the similar specs twice-priced Samsung tablet offers. Does everything it is supposed to do IMO. The earphone jack has a bit of crackle if the jack is moved in the hole but for $249 who cares!

bought their tablet a couple of weeks ago (see earlier ausdroid for info), and had to take it back after a couple of days as the audio stopped working. interestingly, it would display a headphone icon even when the headphones weren’t plugged it

cheap and nasty pieces of hardware. They are giving Android a bad name!

Any info about the screen ppi?

“high quality in-ear earphones” for less than $15. I think not.
