If you’re an owner of one of Google’s Pixel or Nexus phones, you may have noticed in recent times that the check for update button doesn’t exactly do anything. Long criticised as a placebo, Google finally changed the way the button worked last year … to make it actually do something.
However it seems a recent bug introduced into Google Play Services broke the functionality, rendering the button again useless.
With the release of Google Play Services v.12.2.09, the Check for Updates button works again. It seems that this version is in open beta testing at the moment, meaning that if you’re on the beta channel for Play Services, you may already have (or be about to have) this update on your device.
For the impatient, you can also download the next version of Google Play Services from APK Mirror, but this isn’t the recommended approach. Make sure that you read the notes, especially on the 3-digit sequence, so that you download the right version for your device.
We’ve read reports that upon updating to this latest version, the Check for Updates button works again, and the delayed February security updates for Pixel and Nexus devices was immediately available for download.
