Last week during all MWC 2019 news, this one almost slipped past our radar; Apple (or Google) brought Apple Music to Google Home as an optional music service.
However, almost as quickly, the feature disappeared.
With an update to Google Home (to version 2.9.118), Apple Music appeared as an option for music streaming, alongside Google Play Music, YouTube Music and others (such as Deezer and Spotify). It seems the integration wasn’t properly finished, though, as users who had the option visible were unable to link their Apple Music accounts to their Google Home devices.
Subsequently, the option disappeared entirely.
As it stands now, Apple Music can be linked to Google Assistant on iOS only, where it appears to continue to work. Like Venturebeat (where this story was first reported), we agree that this was highly unlikely to have been an accident. Rather, it seems that Apple and Google may be experimenting to bring Apple Music to Google’s smart systems more permanently.
