As the flagship line, Sony’s Xperia Z series phones get the lions share of attention, but they’ve certainly released some quite decent mid-range phones in terms of hardware. Sony has so far advised of plans to release Android 5.0 (Lollipop) to their Xperia Z phones but nothing has been said about their Xperia C3, E1, E3, M2, M2 Aqua, T2 Ultra or T3 handsets – until now.
According to the team running the Sony Xperia Twitter account, those handsets won’t be getting the update, or at least they are only promising to deliver it to the Xperia Z handsets.

It’s far from definitive answer and Sony has changed their minds in the past when it comes to which handsets will receive an update, but if you’re an owner of a mid-range Xperia handset it’s not a great sign. We’ll keep an eye on what’s happening and update if Sony changes their mind.
Want to get more people to recommend your phones to friends and family?
Then promise one major update (KitKat to Lollipop, Lollipop to Mud Cake) and a few patches for all of your phones. Surely it can’t be that hard!
Lollipop has been buggy and problematic anyway. My Sony Kit Kat phone has performed consistently better than either my Nexus 5 or 7 on Lollipop and has much better battery life. Additionally, many of Lollipop’s features are aready on the Z3 series phones. It’s mostly the material design aspect of Lollipop which is missing. I can live without the new design in exchange for stability. That said, I do wish manufacturers would not be so silent on updates for non flagships. It makes no sense to waste time and money developing updates for phones that are not bringing in much… Read more »
Yes, Motorola updates their phones quickly and consistently. Perhaps that’s a factor in their stunning resurgence. Sony should take note.
That’s debatable. Motorola has updated the Moto G first and second gen, but ignored the Moto G 4G.
Which generation of the 4G Moto G?
Whislt there’s only oine gen of it here in Australia, there’s 2 generations of it overseas, with I think 2 distinct version of the second generation.
Strange as it may sound, I don’t think I want all the players to go the stock route. There are some great innovations that happen on top of Google’s image. Things like slow motion video and the ability to do clever edits. I wish my Nexus 5 could do it. A persistent battery % icon – I don’t want to swipe twice to see it! And the terrible cursor thing that I’m having an arm wrestle with right now on my Nexus 7 to try to fix a spelling error – the Sony implementation is actually easy to use!
Given Sony still hasn’t managed to roll out Lollipop for any of its Xperia flagships, this is probably a good thing. I’m becoming increasing frustrated by Sony’s slow rollouts, given Lollipop was released nearly six months ago. LG was the first, and HTC and Samsung followed. I’m thinking that I may start using my M8 as my main phone rather than my Z2.
lollipop has been slow for ALL OEMs (other than the at the time google own moto). So its more of a lollipop being buggy as crap, than the OEMs. HTC missed its 90 day target. LG is MIA, sammy is pretty much MIA etc
The G3 received Lollipop in late Dec/Jan. HTC missed the 90 day deadline by only a few days. Samsung has rolled out Lollipop to the S5 in certain markets. It’s usually providers that hold back the updates. Better to buy a non-branded handset overseas or flash a generic ROM to receive prompt updates directly from the manufacturer.
Umm Samsung has pretty much rolled the Lollipop to all Overseas variants of the S5 (well inside the 90days), they have started on the Note 2, Note 3 and Note 4, and same goes for the Galaxy S4.
Only in Australia they are sh*t (likely to be held back by the local pathetic branch managment and carriers hoping to better line their pockets with the S6) but doesnt mean the entire company should be tarred with the same brush.
Thing is, the preview of Lollipop has been available since last Google I/O. Part of the point was supposed to be that companies would be more prepared and able to rollout the new OS faster. As it turns out, not only did google drop the ball on the quality of the lollipop codebase (despite the extra bug reports), the companies STILL didn’t get their fingers out on updates. Google I/O 2015 is at the end of May, and if it follows last year’s format, they would be announcing the preview of the ‘M’ release. Are we going to be in… Read more »
As someone who has the n5 as a daily driver, lollipop is crap, the updates are slow and they fail at fixing them promptly!
Its disgusting that google I/o is here again and lollipop is at 3% buggy as hell. Its the vista release!
Android 5.1 was.supposed to be released in February. Google doesn’t seem eager to fix bugs.
lol good luck.
I’ve also noticed that the screen on the M8 is better than the Z2, even though it’s smaller. The whites look dirty on the Z2 in comparison, even with the brightness increased.
