One of the criticisms of many phone manufacturers in the past has been their lack of support and updates for older phones as new versions of Android are released. Huawei is one manufacturer who has been guilty of not updating phones in the past. Overnight, they have announced which of their phones have Nougat updates planned for the future.
The list is basically the main phones that were released in 2016, in the following order:
- Mate 8
- P9
- P9 Plus
- P9 Lite
- Nova
- Nova Plus
The Nougat roll-out will begin in the first quarter of 2017 with the Mate 8 and P9 being first, followed by the other four devices. There is already a beta version of Nougat for the P9 floating around the internet which includes the new EMUI 5.0.
Huawei say that EMUI 5.0 is more efficient, secure and user friendly than its predecessor. They claim that it “significantly cuts down on the number of steps needed to achieve the desired function….furthermore, the user can reach 90% of the core functions in just two to three clicks.”
Time will tell, but if Huawei can finally get their software mess sorted out they could start to make some big inroads into Samsung’s dominance in the western world. How do you feel about phones released in 2015 seemingly NOT getting updated, only a year later?
Same with OPPO yet I stay with them because whether I spend $600 or $1,100. I still will be replacing the phone in two years.
My tablet is a Huawei MediaPad M2 8.0 and still on 5.1.1 Rumours of a Marshmallow up date. Nothing yet. Great hardware. Everyone who has a play with it is rapt. Security updates should be mandatory.
Same. Like you say, great hardware, ancient software. I have spoken to people running 6.0 but nobody is sharing. It looks like 6.0 has been released in some countries but the problem I have is that even when it comes to Australia, wo even knows how long Vodafone will sit on it before releasing.
