imageIt looks like the search behaviour from Android’s version of Chrome is coming across to the desktop, with Google dropping off the in-page search bar on search results pages for some users.

While this isn’t the most earth-shattering news, it is none the less a bit of a change in behaviour, and it seems that more than a few users don’t really like it. We received the tip from Tarrant Marshall, and he’s definitely not a fan. Other users have chimed in on Google’s Product Forums, questioning the new move.

Not sure what we’re talking about? On Chrome for Android, if you do a search from the Omnibar (aka the address bar), the search results will show immediately below, with no in-page search box for you to see or change the search query; instead, the search query is shown in the omnibar at the top of the page. It saves on screen real estate, and at the end of the day, it’s a fairly intuitive move.

Bringing that across to the desktop doesn’t quite work so well, though. There are things that the in-page search box can do that the omnibar cannot; for example, rapid auto-complete of search terms to guide your search is something you lose with this change.

What do you think of this new change? Have you seen it on your desktop yet? Let us know which operating system and Chrome version you’ve got if you see it, and we’ll try and figure it out together.

Thanks: Tarrant Marshall.

    anyone else seeing this?

This is massively stupid when you need to modify your search query.
