Google’s smart mailbox system Inbox, is getting some new smarter features later this week, with Google announcing new AI-powered Smart Replies are coming to Inbox later this week.
From later this week, Inbox will begin offering up to three smart replies based on the email you’ve just received. The smart reply may not be just an off the cuff reply either, although that may be all you use it for, but may actually be the start of something more thoughtful that you can use as a starting point.
The Smart Reply feature will be adaptive, and learn from your responses and how you use them – for example, in testing the suggestion of ‘I love you’ served up as a response to co-workers at Google has now been made Safe For Work.
Underneath, Smart Reply uses Google’s deep neural network technology to craft replies, with Google explaining:
There’s actually a lot going on behind the scenes to make Smart Reply work. Inbox uses machine learning to recognize emails that need responses and to generate the natural language responses on the fly. Inbox will be offered to English speakers only at this stage, though with Translate one of Google’s most popular services, other languages can’t be too far behind. The update will roll out through Google Play later this week.
