Last month Google brought better group chat controls to Android, iOS and the Web. Today they have announced that the Chrome Extension will be getting the control features.

New Google Hangouts Chrome extension

The update is scheduled to roll out on August 31 and will bring with it the ability to manage group chats at a more granular level. For users who install the extension after the 31st, they will get the new features by default. Existing users of the extension will have to opt into the new feature once it is live until 16 October, at which point everyone will be migrated automatically.

With Google’s Allo ready to launch any week now it’s good to see Google pouring some love into Hangouts, especially for those who want a cross-platform, multi-device chat, video (or both) application that works on mobile as well as the web Hangouts, provides that, even if it is a bit clunky at times.

Are you happy to see Google Working in Hangouts or are you using a different chat platform? Let us know what you think the best chat platform is (or is going to be) and why.

It seems like the Hangouts team are desperately releasing updates to try and keep their jobs or something. Would have been nice if they did some of these things years ago

I was a pretty heavy hangouts user… but with slow sometimes buggy updates and the focus switching to alo, i’ve made the switch and i’ve also moved all the group chats to messenger.

It seems much better maintained.
