It’s a quiet week on the app update front, but Google has a new update for Chrome for Android bringing version 56 (56.0.2924.87 for those playing at home) to the Play Store from today.

Chrome 56 for Android has a few ‘new’ features and for me at least parts of the first feature aren’t completely new. Google says that from today you can ‘Quickly use emails, addresses, and phone numbers in web pages by tapping on them’ however I’ve been tapping on phone numbers and jumping straight to the dialler from Chrome for a while now – I’ve not really tapped on emails or addresses so this is probably a good thing.

The 2 other new features are a little more interesting with options added to the new tab page:

  • Easily access downloaded files and web pages from the new tab page
  • Long press article suggestions on the new tab page to download them

Google says that there’s more changes in Chrome 56, but these three are the headline features. If you really want to get into the nitty gritty there’s a Git log to peruse, but otherwise just wait for the download notification in Google Play.
