A little while ago we told you about the Vodafone Foundation’s AppAid event, where developers can come together and work on some pretty nifty app ideas for some prominent charities.
Over 48 hours, St Johns Ambulance, the Leukaemia Foundation, Oz Harvest, Starlight Children’s Foundation, NSW Wires and The Centre for Volunteering, are just some of the charities that will be working collaboratively with developers to build apps to help support their communities.
The finer details can be read on our last post, but we teased that Vodafone Foundation had lined up a fairly prominent venture capitalist as a guest judge, and it seems that today is the day to reveal the identity of this judge.
Meet Guy Kawasaki, high-profile venture capitalist and former Apple fellow, and now, AppAid judge. Demelza Farr, Head of the Vodafone Foundation said:
“We are honoured to have Mr Kawasaki join us in Sydney for App Aid. As one of the most revered and influential innovators of our time, Mr Kawasaki brings with him incredible insight and experience that will be invaluable to the developers and charities participating in App Aid.”
With ten charity teams in total vying for the App Aid title, the judging panel will have a tough job ahead of them deliberating which team has developed the most innovative charity app. The Vodafone Foundation will make a $30,000 donation to the charity associated with the app prototype chosen in first place and a $10,000 donation for second place, which each Charity could use as support to further develop their app prototype.
Equally the App Aid teams will be under some pressure to put their very best foot forward when it comes time to present their prototypes smartphone apps to the former chief evangelist of Apple, and Bill Morrow, Vodafone Australia chief executive officer (CEO), who most recently served on the Virgin Group Advisory Board for Richard Branson, prior to joining Vodafone Australia in March.
“We’re certain participants, especially developers both established and aspiring, will get a real kick from being able to showcase their expertise and ideas to Mr Kawasaki and Mr Morrow”, said Demelza. “We’ve got some incredible home-grown App develop talent in Australia, and we look forward to see them collaborate with charities and put their amazing ideas to good use.”
With applications closing for developers on Monday 17 September, Vodafone is urging all interested software developers to submit their applications.
