Remember when you purchased the latest and greatest HTC Desire HD from Vodafone and you were expecting to get updates in a reasonable timeframe? If your answer to that is “yes!” then you’re in luck today. Vodafone and HTC have just pushed out the 2.3.3 update for the Desire HD over the air, meaning you’ll receive a notification soon telling you to update. Vodafone (as well as us here at Ausdroid) recommend you update over Wi-Fi to stop the 103MB update being charged for data use against your account. Here are some quick details about the update:

Details of the release

  • ROM version: 2.37.178.8 (Vodafone) & 2.37.861.8 (Hutchison)
  • Radio Version: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2

What are some of the new features with Android 2.3.3 on HTC Desire HD?

  • UI refinements for simplicity and speed
  • Quicker and easier access to the settings (Quicks settings tab in the notification bar)
  • Improved Apps management via tabs in the all apps menu
  • New camera settings
  • And some HTC fixes improving the overall user experience !

Let us know how the update goes in the comments below!

If you uncheck the auto setting (settings > time and place) then the time zone issue will be solved. It only means you will need to manually change the time zone when you travel (or just check the auto box again)

I downloaded this update ages ago! I really like the new features it has but ever since, my phone keeps asking for the time zone and it gets really annoying!
Apart from this, its awesome!

I updated my DHD couple of days ago to 2.3.3, everything runs smooth and its all good. The only problem I have is similar to most people are having is with the time zone, don’t know when HTC will fix this cause its rather annoying to set it up all the time. The other issue I’m have is when writing a text message it does spell check, I don’t know how it keeps doing that automatically because I have unticked the box where it says spell check in the settings. Settings> Language & keyboard> Touch Input> Text Input > and… Read more »

Upgraded a few weeks ago. Upgrade was seamless (well done HTC). Only annoying issue experienced is the time zone issue (forgets the time zone & asks you to re-enter it). I do not use Wi-Fi so cannot comment on that. Otherwise I cannot find fault.

xbytes

Recently upgrade my HTC Desire HD to 2.3.3 version after recieving an update status from Yes Optus last June 25, 2011. The unit is from phillipines at AUD600 unlocked and so far no worries.

2.3 sucks

I upgraded my HTC Desire HD a few days ago to 2.3.  The phone was running slow before the update but no toher issues. NOW…. every call drops out after a few minutes, messages don’t always send, signal strength worse than before. Seriously thinking about a factory reset!!! Would rather have a slow phone than be mid conversation and have to keep calling people back, especially when you have called, for example, customer service  at an organisation and they’re half way through helping you with something, then you have to call back, get someone different and satrt all over again. Very… Read more »

After a couple of weeks of using the update, i found it to be ok.

I did have my wifi drop out a couple of times on a big download, and i had the timezone issue (which was easily fixed by manually setting). Haven’t noticed any loss of battery time. Overall, i found it to be worth the upgrade. Apart from what i outlined above, the new features of Gingerbread / Sense UI have come in quite handy, and made the whole experience easier and more user friendly.

dre

Max. 8 connections in hotspot is also an upgrade I think (previously 2)

Adam Pierce

I installed it three days ago. Most things work fine and the phone seems a little smoother but the WiFi keeps dropping out. Battery life seems a little worse, probably because it’s constantly disconnecting and reconnecting the WiFi. Also there’s a new feature where it forgets what time zone I am in and asks me to re-enter my time zone about 10 times a day which is annoying. The WiFi thing is real frustrating though, any large-ish download will fail. As a workaround I’ve turned WiFi off and am accessing the internet via 3G (that’s not real reliable either because… Read more »

Yeah the time zone issue is really annoying and we are supposed to get a new keyboard with the update ;(

NickNilo

Had the timezone issue since updating to 2.3.3 Fri 3rd. Really annoying, asks at least once a day to specify timezone, and im using network time as i was before the update.  Not sure why the network/cells would cause this. 2.2 did sometimes mistakingly ask me the question after a reboot and only once in a while but not everyday, something is not right…

Nandinasurya

hi adam regarding the wifi issue check these settings on ur phone. it would help u to resolve
menu>settings>wireless&network>wifi settings>menu>advanced>wifi sleep policy>never
hope it may fix ur problem
regards

Adam Pierce

After writing a complaint to HTC, they finally got back to me (after about 2 weeks). They said that several people have reported WiFi issues with the 2.3 update and they are investigating. They might release another update if they can find a way to fix it.

Nandinasurya, I never knew you could press MENU when in the WiFi settings page. There’s a whole bunch of extra options in there, how about that! I’ll try setting the sleep time to “never” as you suggested.

Adam Pierce

Setting the WiFi to never sleep has worked but at the cost of worse battery life. The WiFi now is responsible for 15-20% of my battery usage according to the battery history, it used to be about 7%. And I’ve still got the timezone issue. Maybe it’s hard-reset time.

Weaponfx

Fantastic update.
1: Everything is loading faster, swipes are faster and smoother
2: Camera self portrait is so accurate and handy, the camera is faster and isn’t jamming up
3: I’m actually getting 90% signal strength in my home, before the update it was 30%
4: Menu and apps list changes are so user friendly and more streamlined, new apps are great as well.
5: Can’t comment on battery life yet but I hope there is an improvement.

Girlgerm1

WORST UPDATE EVER!!!!! I’m now writing on my wife’s old iPhone because I can no longer get any network on my desire hd. Rather annoying.

Tomas Donovic

That is strange, what sort of network? wifi or 3g? I have a fleet of 6 DHDs and none of them had any problems….

Girlgerm1

Hey Tomas, it is 3G in cairns. I search for networks and it tells me there is an error searching. Not sure what is going in the bin first, the dhd or this iPhone, probably not the iPhone since it actually makes calls. I did a hard reset but that did nothing.

A_bogaert

I installed the 2.3 update about 3 days ago when i recieved the notification on my phone.. It crashed within a day and i lost all my stuff has i had nothing backed up. I had no network coverage at all, It was unavailable for about half a day so i did a hard reset on my phone and it reset everything. Since the my DHD has been amazing and so much faster and better battery life than previously!

Level380

Sounds very strange. My update happened without issues. Try a hard reset on your device

Menu -> settings -> SD & phone storage -> Factory data reset

You can tick the ‘erase sd card’ option to ensure a sure clean phone are the hard reset.

I mean what do you have to loose? You said its not working at all today!

Funkyphil_au

Awesome update . not had the phone long Desire HD and still working on a couple of issues my problems not the phone and Bam along comes an update . The Update installed 100 % ok and the new refinements are great thanks..

JeniSkunk

Lucky sods.
Just found elseweb that LG have pushed 2.3 for the Optimus One, from end of May 2011 to back to sometime in July 2011.
🙁

maatsby

not sure if it was a coincidence that my update became available shortly after doing this or if it actually worked, but i read that you can “check in” your phone to encourage it to find the update. after i did it, the update became available a few hours later, so i reckon people should give it a go: in the phone dialer type in *#*#2432545#*#* (translates as *#*#checkin#*#*). the numbers will disappear and you’ll get a notification a few seconds later in the notification tray saying “checkin succeeded”. then wait a while and manually check for the update in… Read more »

I just went to settings / about phone / software updates and pressed ‘check now’ a few days after this article. It found the update without me having to wait for a notification from 3 / Vodafone or ‘checking in’

PaulJ

Done for 3. All good except I don’t like how the apps menu is now set out as pages rather than one continuous scroll. Is there some setting to change this that I have missed?

A_bogaert

I noticed that you can list them all down the page and scroll all the way down or up, but if it is set up as grid then it stops you at each “page” or whatever you would call it!

Chumly

Just updated.

That was my first OTA android update (have done one on Symbian before) and man it was smooth. quick, painless and not an app icon out of place.Phone runs smooth and changes are nice while minor.

Anthonaut

Not entirely relevant but does anyone know the source of the background image of the DHD in the article? I like it very much!

Buzz Moody

It’s the default for the HTC Sense theme I was using at the time; can’t remember what it was called.

Anthonaut

Thanks!

Matt4825

Its the theme/scene music lover

Ty Hancock

Phew, found it!! 🙂
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12888006&postcount=6
The theme is called “Music Lover” as stated. Just download the apk linked and change the extension to zip. Then the wallpaper is under assetsimagewallapaper.jpg
I love it too!

Tomas Donovic

I use this theme just for that background.
It is weird how different the notification bar looks on a desire z

peter baker

what about the desire z?  I think I read vodafone were testing gingerbread on the desire z at the same time they were testing the dhd.

Buzz Moody

Indeed, that update should be pushed out in the next couple of weeks.

Kris

I got my DHD through Vodafail and am downloading the update right now. Fingers crossed it all goes well!

Toyboy4u2

Alot of people in the uk were complaining that the upgrade stuffed their wifi signal, battery life and sending sms, has anyone experienced this before i update? Desire hd.

A_bogaert

I updated mine to 2.3 and i instantly had failure with my net work (vodadone australia) and i couldnt send a message to certain people… it then wouldnt let me send messages to anyone or call. I have since done a hard reset and it restored my phone back to 2.3 but the update now works perfectly!

Dy4me

most important question. can the gingerbread update be rooted? nice to see u buzz actually replying to ppl. refreshing change.

Piers Porter

I bought my Desire HD a while back from an Australian online shopping store. It was fully unlocked, only cost AUD$480 and seemed to be shipped directly from Taiwan judging by the default language and preinstalled apps. I’ve been using it with a Telstra SIM card (which isn’t officially supported since it’s not Next-G compatible); but since I spend a lot of time outside Australia it doesn’t bother me much. My question – will I ever get an update? If not, is there any manual way to do one, or do I need to root it and install a custom… Read more »

Well I never though that would work but it did! I went to “Settings > About Phone > Software Updates > Check Now”, and it found the Gingerbread update and applied it. So even with an unlocked A9191 phone with a Telstra SIM and being overseas currently, the update was found an applied successfully. Go HTC!

xbytes

I did upgrade my HTC Desire HD to 2.3.3 when i cameback to australia from philippines last saturday June 25, 2011. The unit is unlock and been using Yes Optus with no problem at all. The unit is USD600 in phillipines.

Joveta

just upgraded via a DHD on 3 network, works fine!

Dave

I bought my desire HD outright and I’m with Optus. How do I get this update?

Buzz Moody

Your update won’t be sent out via Vodafone or Optus, you’ll receive the update whenever HTC pushes it out for your device (wherever it is from).

gutenmuach

Noob here.

Do I lose everything contained in the phone? If yes, how do I make a back up? Especially the arrangement of my apps & widgets on all the 7 pages?

If no, what are the things that I will lose?

Thank you!

Buzz Moody

Nope, you won’t lose anything saved on your SD card. You may want to backup your SMS messages though using an app like this: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result

gutenmuach

Thanks for letting me know about that SMS backup app.

Buzz, just confirm with you again, the arrangement of my apps and widgets on all the 7 pages will not be reseted, will it? where is this arrangement being saved anyway?

Buzz Moody

I believe this will be reset back to the default layout, I’m not too sure how you’d go about saving it. I could be wrong though — sorry.

No worries re. SMS backup app.

Suggest you take screenshots of all your pages/screens to make setting them back up easier if the do default to factory settings.

Just to let anyone that has the same question as I had.

I have done the update, and everything is like it was before, nothing was removed/deleted.

The 7 pages widgets and apps arrangement are still in place.

It doesn’t affect my 24 inch widescreen 😀

I have my HTC HD contract with 3 – (who is now Vodafone I know) but I’m wondering if 3 customers will get the same service?

Stewart Howell

Yes.
Brand new Desire HD arrived in Melbourne from THREE today. Notification for software update appeared as soon we gave it a WiFi connection. OTA upgrade worked perfectly 2.2 to 2.3.3.

just got the update yesterday 🙂 so yes

Matt

Does anyone have any inside info on progress with the original Desire’s Gingerbread update?  Telstra’s schedule estimates June, but that was last updated a fair while back.

Buzz Moody

I haven’t heard anything yet. It can’t be too far away 🙂

Matt

Yeah, I figure that with the DHD update out the Desire one shouldn’t be too far behind, but then you never really know…

Antony Pullella

updated mine about an hour ago and is working beautifully, the apps thing and the quick settings is a great idea.

Also the font has changed, seems to be alot easier to read

Buzz Moody

That’s always a bonus! Good to hear it worked out for you. Enjoy!

maatsby

what’s the deal with my DHD? i bought it outright off ebay and still haven’t received the update. i’m SHOCKED that a carrier is releasing it before i get it! is there anything i can do to look for the update and force my phone to download it? (besides root and rom as i don’t have time to get my head around that at the moment)

i’ve been to the “about phone” menu at least once a day and checked for system software updates but it’s always “no updates available”.

Buzz Moody

It all depends on where your device is originally from and whether or not it’s running a custom ROM. HTC may not have pushed out the update for the device’s origin.

maatsby

thanks buzz, that was a helpful and prolific reply-spree you went on
