Update: The release is Autumn, not Spring. The email was a global one, therefore the seasons are for the northern hemisphere, not the more-important southern hemisphere. Our apologies for not picking up on this earlier.

In an email from Sony Ericsson Australia’s Chief Marketing Officer, Steve Walker, a release date for the Sony Xperia S was mentioned and we’re pretty excited about it, mainly due to the excellent specs of the device.

“The first smartphone product from Sony, available this [Autumn], will be the new Sony Xperia™ S”

While the Sony Ericsson Australia website has had the Xperia S listed as ‘Coming Soon’ for almost a month, there’s been no real idea of a release date, but now we have a vague idea. As for specs, it’s all really quite impressive, but we’ll hold proper judgement until we’ve actually played with one — the UI could be a let-down, it could also be awesome.

  • 4.3-inch 1280×720 342ppi (HD) Reality Display
  • 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 Dual-Core CPU
  • Android 2.3 (4.0 coming during the second quarter)
  • HSPA 14.4Mbps 850/900/1900/2100MHz
  • 1GB RAM, 16/32GB Interal Storage
  • 12MP Rear Camera / 1.3MP HD Front Camera
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth, NFC

If the price is right, would you be interested in the Xperia S? Or will you wait it out to see what Samsung has hiding in the Galaxy S III? For me, it’s the latter.

hey, was just wondering if you guys knew when will the experia S be available in Perth?

My dream phone … Cant wait

Why are all you guys so hung up on the Samsung? Seems to me that all reviewers etc are on either or both Apple and Samsung payrolls. I have played with Samsung’s and they are a load of crap! Good marketing not much substance. I guess you lot miss out on the really good phones because you get caught up in marketing hype. Your loss.

when u guys said autumn release for the phone does that mean the release date is somewhere between march to may

Sony should have ditched the weird green logo they had as SE.

Good looking phone, but not for me. I need quicker updates before I go back to Sony!

Oh blasphemy.
The gooey minty ball of yumminess is a great little logo.

I love the little green logo, leave it SONY dont u dare remove it … 🙂 BTW you have got my money SONY This is my next phone.

I’m liking the look of this phone. Might pick it up to replace my Desire Z in a couple of months time.

Pretty sure they just didn’t amend the email to reflect the location of the audience. What sense would there be in releasing a device here 6 MONTHS later than the rest of the world? I got the email this morning and assumed this was the case – and screenshots I’ve seen posted online today were identical save the region mentioned at the end of “Steve Walker, Chief Marketing Officer, Sony Ericsson, Australia”. Hoping that’s the case, anyway.

Our apologies, it is Autumn. We should have picked up on that earlier.

This is utter stupidity. The rest of the world sees it very soon but we see it later on. I am a huge sony fan and was so looking forward in May to updating my Xperia X10i. Now if i want there “flagship” phone i have to wait until almost the end of the year. Seriously thinking about dropping Sony for samsung.

Our apologies, it is Autumn. We should have picked up on that earlier.

Well thats a little too late now as yesterday i lost all confidence with Sony because of this and have now locked into 24 months with the Samsung Nexus.

This phone is blocky and has a real plastic look about it. Apparently there are no real improvements with the camera. They couldn’t have moved further away from the stylish concept of the Arc…which is a shame. There will be more phones released soon.

As for the transparent strip…it looks like its been glued on as an afterthought.

I want a Sony phone that’s as tough as the Active, as stylish as the Arc and is technologically comparable, otherwise i’ll stick to my Arc.

Well, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I think that it looks quite stylish, and it’s the first Xperia I’d actually consider buying. I think the Arc and others are just hideous, and I ruled them out on appearance alone.

Are you kidding me?

Spring would be September-November, this is hugely disappointing and a major downfall for Sony here, even the Galaxy S III would beat it to the market and that probably won’t get announced for months.

Unless he messed up and took it as Spring overseas, thus Autumn here, that is a major mess up for Sony down under.

Our apologies, it is Autumn. We should have picked up on that earlier.

Remember Sony works in the Northern hemisphere. their spring is our autumn. Simple mistake.
