We reached out to Google Australia earlier today asking if there was any chance of the Google Play gift cards that launched today would ever find their way to Australian stores. It turns out that there may well be a chance of that happening in the future with Google Aus stating:

“…we want to give users in other counties more ways to pay in Google Play and want to sell gift cards outside the US eventually. But, we don’t have anything to share about Australia at this time.”

This is great news, and we don’t see why it wouldn’t happen. iTunes gift cards are always being snapped up — especially when on discounted sale — by consumers in physical stores. Then again, iTunes gift cards can go towards more than just eBooks, Movies and Apps, which is all Google Play allows in Australia. Music sales aren’t yet available on Google Play here in Australia with no official announcement from Google on when, or if, that service will launch here.

Possible retailers for the gift cards could very well be the same ones as in the US: Target and EB Games (GameStop), with the possibility of JB Hi-Fi jumping on board as well — though that’s all pure speculation on our part.

Would you be interested in Google Play gift cards launching here in Australia? They seem like a viable gift for fellow Android users.

I’m actually quite annoyed at Google as they have released them to the US market yet not to Australia…. The on thing the Apple do very well is release things around the world almost simultaneously

UNHAPPY CUSTOMER

Google play gift cards would be very popular because people who that dont have a master card or other types of other cards e.g children would buy them.

jono667

absolutely. I don’t have a credit card so there is no way for me to pay for apps. this would help stop piracy a lot here I think! I’m more than happy to pay for some apps and games, but there’s just no way of doing it! I can’t wait for it

BUTTER

I wish it would come out quicker i neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed one because i dont have a credit card

Ambush

In the meantime Google loses millions to iTunes and pirated downloads as I for one will not trust Google with my credit card details

Peter Gav

it would be awesome if they did come out please….

Incognitos

Yes. I will never use a credit card on these sites. I solely use gift cards on iTunes and expect to do the same on Google play. The lack of this feature is preventing me from purchasing a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. Bigger.

One option is to get a Load&Go prepaid visa from Australia Post http://auspost.com.au/personal/loadandgo-reloadable-prepaid-visa-card.html

Kathryn Hawkins

Desperately looking for these as best option when have children who have android tablets but not want to link a parent’s bank account to it in case of accidental purchases

Please, please, please. I was shocked when I changed over from itunes to google that this didn’t exist – never occurred to me to ask as I assumed it did. Not giving google my debit card details….no way. I believe many would feel the same and google are missing out on a huge income for it.

Brandon

Apart from their shared name, Target US and Target AU are totally independent from each other so Target US carrying the cards is no indication of what would happen in Australia. Its just as unlikely that coles would put the cards in target exclusively and leave out Kmart and Coles.

JeniSkunk

Google needs to get Play working properly here in Australia, so we can buy music and movies, before they bring in the gift cards.

Dan

I agree, most people use iTunes gftcards for music purchases, without music on aus play don’t waste the effort bringing them here.

Jay

I would use Google Play cards for fee free purchases. Currently Mastercard charges more fees than I pay for in apps!

38!

Dont forget you can buy apps with itunes gift cards.

NickT

This, IMHO, is exactly why I don’t believe Google/Android can seriously compete with iOS. Google are very US centric, they’re almost encouraging piracy for non-American users of their devices. Its taken Apple many years to finally get our content almost on par with the US, yet Google can’t even bring us music.

TT

ASAP please and can’t wait

Pissed off at Mastercard

i would love to buy Google Play gift cards, I currently use google wallet with my Mastercard, so far most of my purchases have copped more in fees than the original purchase price! Bring in the fee-free purchases!!!!

gfy

Yes I’d soo buy. I dont have a credit card or any card to use so cant buy. 🙁

Gregorian

Yeah. I’d rather give my kid a $20 card than supply my Visa number to her.
