We’ve been in contact with LG locally for information regarding the Nexus 4 and LG’s role in creating the latest phone in the Nexus lineup. They have advised what we already know, that the Nexus 4 will be available to order in both an 8GB and 16GB versions through Google Play from November 13. The Nexus 4 is being sold as an unlocked handset and is GSM/HSPA+ compatible so it will operate on every network provider in Australia. All that is required is a SIM card from a carrier and you’re good to go. The phone will be available in Late November with ‘Further information on offline availability in Australia will be available late November’ which hopefully indicates a carrier release for those who do not wish to purchase outright.
In regards to the role that LG played in creating the Nexus 4, Lambro Skropidis, Marketing General Manager for LG Electronics Australia advised :

So far we have had no word back from the three major carriers in regards to them offering the Nexus 4 on plans at this stage but we know that there are definitely people out there who would welcome the ability to purchase the phone on a plan. We’ll be following up with information on local availability from carriers as soon as the information comes to hand.

LG seemed to pull this out of nowhere. Is it the case that any manufacturer can build a slim, quad-core, superphone these days?

well $350 for 8gb and $400 for 16gb make this phone a killer entry point for developers and those wanting the pure android experience, however coming from a galaxy nexus and living in melbourne this phone not having LTE is a really killer for me… as 3g/NextG (and yes im with telstra) is barely usable both at work (CBD) and Home (CBD Fringe)
Actually, its $399 AUD for the 16Gb (though with shipping, it’ll be about $420). How is the LTE coverage Australia-wide? Surely they need another year to really roll it out (reliably) in most cities?

Regrettably waiting for a worthy flagship device.
So long as the upgrade path on the LG Nexus 4 isn’t as slow as that with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. At that price, I would buy outright, just to secure timely updates from Google themselves.
I don’t want to sound like a broken record… but if you’re going to partner with a carrier… Please add some 4G flavour too! 🙂
