The most frustrating screen in the world
The most frustrating screen in the world

This was a big week for Android updates, with all three carriers releasing Android 4.1 updates to their flagship Android phones — the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S III.

But often, these updates are rolled out progressively and you may have to wait a couple of weeks for the update to reach your phone. But fear not, gentle readers, there is a way to force your phone to download the update. I have personally tested this method on Optus’ HTC One X, and it will (eventually) show the update as being available.

  1. Go to Settings, then Apps
  2. Tap on the tab that says ‘All’ and scroll down to ‘Google Services Framework’
  3. Tap ‘Clear data’, and then ‘Force stop’
  4. Go back to the Settings menu, and scroll all the way to the bottom to ‘About’
  5. Tap ‘Software updates’
  6. Tap ‘Check now’ at the bottom of the screen.

Hopefully now, you should see a notification that there is a system update available. If it still says there is no update available, repeat the above process a couple of times. It took me four tries before I decided to reboot the phone, after which the update became available. I’m 42% downloaded, and can’t wait to see if HTC have done anything with Android 4.1 that makes me want to stay on it for longer than a couple of days.

Hi James,

Updating now. I think it was the reset that did the trick.

Well after trying for about 45 mins and 5 restarts it hasnt worked on my unlocked,Mobicity purchased S3.
Guess I’ll just have to wait till the roll out finds me

My wife’s One X updated by itself…. to be honest, when a phone’s update is due, it’s turned up soon enough. But after the update she’s asking “Why have my Texts changed colour?” It worried her. I can see why HTC and Samsung work so hard to make their updates NOT change the phones too much. It freaks out the common peoples. They got two completely different audiences to please. The techfans, who want the changes and the more the better. And the Mums, who are afraid of the phones in the first place and get stressed if anything unexpected… Read more »

I fix PC’s for a living, and you are so right; it’s actually really frustrating!

Very helpful downloading now

Sitting here in the process of going from yakjuxw to yakju…
Oh Kogan. Where the hell do you get your phones from?
This phone has sat on 4.0.4 for a couple of months. Forgotten by Google and Samsung.

I’ve done the same its so much better a different phone

I have an S3 from Kogan. I connected to Kies about a month ago and it updated to 4.1.1

worked for me, just restart the phone then do it

If you have terrible battery with a new update, I was advised by Samsung to do a Factory Reset which indeed does fix the battery drain problems.

HTC updates aren’t throttled anyway, and Samsung updates are throttled at the server end.

This is all just a placebo effect. People claim the same thing during the GNexus roll out with VERY mixed results (ie, no better than random chance).

Also, why would clearing the Google Services Framework have an impact on HTC’s or Samsung’s update mechanism? They’re all different services.

Yep, 100% agree. How do know when you would have gotten it anyway?

Well obviously, I can’t objectively say that it works or not, but the phone wasn’t getting the update, I ran through this, and then I did. It just seems a little too convenient to pass off as a placebo. I have also used this method previously, on Vodafone’s HTC Legend and it worked. It’s worth a try, surely?

If I were a betting man, I’d say it was the restart that kicked it off and not the four prior attempts at clearing data from an unrelated service 🙂

Bit disappointed with 4.1 with Optus on the One X. Was running better with the last update. Was faster with better battery life IMO. Considering a factory reset.

please, 4.1 is way smoother on the one x, stop making up false events in your head

True, htc has done a great job on the jelly bean update, apart from the now missing sceolling wallpaper and the ability to bring down the keyboard

Didn’t work for me on the Moto RAZR M on Telstra

that’s because the update for the Razr M hasn’t been released yet. obviously this only works for updates that are actually available. the above process worked for the 4.2 update on my nexus 7 a while ago. didn’t need to do anything to get the update prompt straight away on my Razr HD last week…
