Xperia Z pre-order
Sony has just opened up pre-orders for their new flagship phone the Xperia Z. Pre-orders for the phone are being taken via the Sony website and the phone has been listed with a retail price of $749 – excluding delivery costs although Sony advises delivery on a package up to 2KG is only $9.95. Sony hasn’t given a date for when the phone will ship but they have advised previously that the phone will launch at some stage during March.

Chris attended the Sony Xperia Z launch in Sydney yesterday and has one currently for review. You can also check out the post that Adam and James did based on their experience with Xperia Z units that are available at the Sony Centres, which if you’re interested in the handsets you can do at the various Sony Centres around Australia excluding Drummoyne and World Square.

Pricing and availability for the Xperia Z hasn’t been listed by any of the Mobile Operators as yet but it will launch on Optus, Telstra and Vodafone. Telstra is already taking expressions of interest and you can sign up here for more information, Vodafone is showing a lot of videos of the Xperia Z on their Google+ page but Optus hasn’t really done much at all.

The Xperia Z is definitely on the high end specification wise, with a very nice Reality Display screen that boasts a 1080P resolution and as you can see the rest of the specs aren’t anything to sneeze at either.

  • 5-inch 1080p Reality Display
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean w/ Skin (4.2 updated at a later date)
  • Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core CPU @ 1.5GHz
  • 13MP Exmor RS Rear Camera
  • 2GB RAM, unknown expandable memory.
  • Dust and water resistant (IP55 & IP57)
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
  • 2330mAh Battery
  • 7.9mm Thickness

Given the relatively high outright price of the pre-order for the phone, it may be prudent to wait and see what the Mobile Operators in Australia begin asking for the phone on a plan, but if you’re that into the Xperia Z now is your chance.

Its worth if they provide free headphones or dock charger like uk was doing.

waiting

cant select colour, no release date, no expected shipping date, and the preorder T&C “Please note that all payments will be processed immediately, regardless of current product availability” i think is a bit risky. i will wait for a bit longer till sony release more information or go with the HTC one if it got release early than the xperia z.

i agree with that it be best if they let u preorder now and pay for it when the phone is shipped and arrive at ur doorstep

Jamesz Zhang

the problem with the preorder is u cant choose which colour u want when the phone is shipped to you i would preorder it once they put colour options in

With the Australia Tax they’re adding there (it’s ~AU$620 + postage from Handtec), they could certainly afford to provide free shipping.

wordly

What a great looking device. Having played with one the other day, I love the screen and the camera. Did find the keyboard a touch laggy but the Sony guys said there are a few small things being ironed out which will be ready by launch. With Telstra about to raise MRO prices, I hope this handset isnt going to be too expensive

I had a play with one last week in the Perth Sony store. They were more than willing to let me have a play, although did have a guy stand uncomfortably close whilst I was playing (sort of understandable!)

Definitely hope they aren’t too unreasonable on the lower Telstra plans, although I still have 6mths of my contract left so they should get a bit cheaper by then!

Too many $$$
