plex

Lovers of home media setups will probably be familiar with Plex. Plex is a suite of applications which allow you to serve media from your home computer to other devices, which can themselves run a Plex client application or have embedded support for UPNP media discovery and playback. I personally have a MacMini with a 1TB hard drive attached which I record TV shows to, and play them back from using Plex Server and our PS3 for playback.

Plex has clients for a range of mobile devices too, including Android, and their Android app has just been updated to version 3.0. Subscribers to Plex’ Plexpass service (like me) have been able to trial this software for awhile now, and I can tell you it offers some pretty sweet features. Plex for Android has been rewritten from scratch and its new features include:

  • Brand new layout and flow for playing media locally as well as controlling other Plex devices;
  • Support for offline sync, meaning you can download your media content to view on the run, all within the app; and
  • Better playback support with a range of options to improve viewing experience.

The list of new features and fixes is nothing short of enormous, and if you want to see the full list, you can refer to Plex’ announcement on their blog.

For the media hounds amongst you, this will be a great update to a favourite media app.

    I’ve got plex media server running on Ubuntu with all content on my NAS, with a Sony Google TV plex client for the living room, and a Nexus 7 & 10 as media devices around the house.

    Fantastic setup – highly recommend plex, and this update makes it even better. Hopefully the Google TV client will get this update soon aswell….

    I really want to use plex but they really need to make a Linux client.

    Im really tempted to find a way to get win8 on my htpcs and use that client. Would look great on a tv.

    If all else fails, the web client works pretty well..

    yeah i just stick to xbmc as their client is much nicer to use than the web client.

    Just plex works better if you have multiple pcs accessing the same content.
