Galaxy Club Netherlands is reporting that Samsung recently filed for a trademark under the name of “Galaxy Gear”, believed to refer to the smartwatch they’re rumoured to have been working on in recent months.

The trademark filing for the device is somewhat generic. Documents describe the device as follows:

Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages; wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers

This appears to be describing a smartwatch, so it seems this is the name Samsung intends to use for the wearable device, although some of us here at Ausdroid suspect this could actually refer to a product range rather than one specific device.

It is expected that the Galaxy Gear will be unveiled at IFA, at Samsung’s own Unpacked event, typically used to launch Galaxy Note devices.

Samsung will have to move fast – a number of competitors are rumoured to have their own smartwatches either in development or about to be unveiled.
