Aldi are bringing back their popular 10″ and 8″ tablets and their 5″ phone all at once for a pre-Christmas sale. Starting this Saturday (16 November), the Bauhn 10.1″ 3G Quad Core Android Tablet, the Bauhn 8″ 3G Android Tablet and the Bauhn 5″ Smartphone will be on sale.
The Bauhn 10.1″ 3G tablet ($229) runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the following specifications:

Note that both tablets run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean – not the most up-to-date operating system, but fine for these mid-level devices. The processors are also mid to low tier – so undemanding games should run alright. Both tablets are Wi-Fi and 3G enabled, so if you wanted to you can pop in a SIM card to make and receive calls and SMS. The frequencies that they use are 3G 850/2100 MHz, which means that they will work well on Aldi, Telstra and Boost networks.
You don’t have to use a SIM, as they will both work well as Wi-Fi only tablets.
The Bauhn 5″ Smartphone ($249) has a 1.2GHz Quad-core processor, a 5″ 1280 x 720 display, 8GB storage expandable by up to 32GB via microSD card, 2050mAh removable battery and dual SIM slots. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

It would be nice if you ignore the fact that for less than $300 you can buy the best existing Android tablet, Nexus 7 (2013). Nexus is packed with power and features, it’s real joy for the user.
The Nexus 7 might be a real joy for the user, until the user wants, or needs, 3G data and/or 3G phone and/or microSDHC/XC. These Aldi tablets are entry level tablets with 3G data, 3G phone, and microSDHC/XC capability straight out of the shrinkwrap, for less than half or a third the price of the similarly sized Samsung offerings.
If all you want is only WiFi data and no storage expansion capability and a smaller formfactor than what Aldi offer, then yes, the Nexus 7 is worth looking at.
Well to be fair the Nexus 7 does come in a 3G/4G variety as well, but it is a bit more expensive. It doesn’t come with expandable memory.. but I’ve never found that all that useful.. that’s just me though 😉
The only versions of the Nexus tablets I’d heard of were the WiFi data only ones.
I had no idea that there were any 3G/4G data versions.

I bought one of the 10in tablets in the initial sale of them in June. Mine had a hardware fault and was returned for refund. I bought another in the July sale, and this one has worked well. The 10in ships with what seems to be a minimally customized AOSP rom, and for basic tablet tasks is quite good. It does, however have 4 serious weakpoints. 1. Straight out of the shrinkwrap both the 10in and 8in tablets NEED bugfixing.
The 10in needs the NetworkLocations.apk file replaced with a working one. Firmware update is useful but not essential.
The 8in needs it’s firmware updated to current to make it work properly.

The 10.1in Aldi Bauhn WL-101GQC, first listed in June 2013, would work just fine for what you want to do.
Reading the Whirlpool thread about the August 2013 8in HDC-08 would have issues doing the job.
Problem is that this ad was for Xmas 2013, so the only way to get either tablet is second hand, and before you think about asking; my Bauhn WL-101GQC is NOT for sale.
