Hot on the heels of Qualcomm revealing their new Snapdragon 805 System on Chip (SoC), MediaTek – the third largest chip maker in the world – has an announcement of its own. The MT6592 SoC has just been released, and MediaTek says that it’s the “world’s first true octa-core mobile platform”. The processor uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, and all 8 cores can be in operation simultaneously at up to 2GHz.
The Taiwan based company has a strong grasp on the Chinese market for smart phone processors. This new chip will be available before the end of the year for devices running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. For phones and tablets running the more current Android 4.4 KitKat, the SoC will be available in early next year.
MediaTek said in a press release:
Building on the advanced 28nm HPM high-performance process, the MT6592 has eight CPU cores, each capable of clock speeds up to 2GHz. The true octa-core architecture is fully scalable, and the MT6592 runs both low-power and more demanding tasks equally effectively by harnessing the full capabilities of all eight cores in any combination. An advanced MediaTek scheduling algorithm also monitors temperature and power consumption to ensure optimum performance at all times.
The MT6592 features a world-class multimedia subsystem with a quad-core graphics engine, an advanced video playback system supporting Ultra-HD 4Kx2K H.264 video playback and support for new video codecs such as H.265 and VP9, a 16-megapixel camera and a Full HD display. The SOC also features MediaTek ClearMotion™ technology for automatic frame-rate conversion of standard 24/30fps video to high-quality 60fps video for significantly smoother playback.
The chip also features Miracast screen sharing, dual-band 801.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and a FM tuner. Recent benchmarks of the chip show that it has similar power to the current Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor – which is used in flagship devices such as the LG G2,Sony Xperia Z and Ultra Z, Samsung Note 3 LTE and Nexus 5 – but it is expected to be priced much lower.
Gameloft has partnered with MediaTek to optimise their new Modern Combat 5 for the MT6592, which demonstrates their confidence that the octa-core chip will handle intensive games with ease. Modern Combat 5 will be available in early 2014. Ludovic Blondel, Vice President OEM at Gameloft said:

This is getting really silly. I think the new iPhone shows that it’s not always the number of core that a CPU has, but how well they’ve been designed. Few, better cores can give equal performance while saving power.
