As rumoured yesterday, the Sony Xperia Z2 has launched on Optus today, and in new news, will launch on Vodafone in a few days on the 7th. Announcing the launch this morning, Sony Mobile’s John Featherstone said:

Sony Mobile has taken the premium Z series to the next level with the Xperia Z2. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting and offers new ways to use the camera with our unique Xperia camera apps. Our unparalleled sound technologies allow customers to listen to their music even in noisy environments without interruptions thanks to our acclaimed digital noise cancelling technology.

We won’t repeat yesterday’s news, because really there’s not much to say other than “what was supposed to happen actually did”, but the Xperia Z2 looks to be a pretty decent handset. Sony have developed quite a knack for making great handsets, starting with the Xperia Z back in February last year, and continuing on with the Z1 and now Z2 following on.

With 3GB of RAM, plenty of internal storage and expandable storage options as well, and a giant 3200 mAh battery, the Xperia Z2 is sure to perform well. It’s built on the same internals as the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, so chances are its going to be a solid contender.

The Xperia Z2 will be available in Vodafone stores from 7th May, and is available for online purchase from Optus from today. Would-be customers can purchase Xperia Z2 on the following plans:

  • $16 handset repayment on the Optus $60 plan
  • $10 handset repayment on the Vodafone $65 plan

The Xperia Z2 will also be available to order through Sony direct channels for SRP$759.00 from today. Regardless, of how you get your hands on the Z2, you’ll get some bonus goodies as well.

Customers who purchase the Xperia Z2 will also receive a digital copy of XSCAPE, an album of new tracks from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Xperia Z2 owners will be able to get the album with their Xperia Z2 on the day of the album’s digital release through the Xperia Lounge app.

Better yet, if you purchase through Optus before 31 July 2014, to celebrate the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup, you’ll receive a bonus pair of Adidas training shoes, valued at $190 RRP.

As soon as we get our hands on the Xperia Z2, you can imagine we’ll be sharing our review not long after. Dan’s already planning on buying one to update his running shoes…

I’d certainly appreciate a review of the Z1 Compact too if you get a chance.
