Selfies App Banner

The team responsible for bringing us WordPress, Automattic, has quietly launched a new social photo-sharing network just for the duck-face fans among you, that’s right, Selfies is un-surprisingly just for Selfies.

The app and network, which have seen little to no promotion was actually intentionally released that way. A representative from the company behind Selfies app, told TechCrunch that the app was simply just put out there to see what happened. The answer is, not much. When Tech Crucnch looked into it, the app had accumulated only 100-500 downloads – it’s now 10x that with 1000-5000 downloads.

Selfies was in development for eight weeks or so as part of the Gravatar universal avatar app before the team transitioned it into its own separate entity. The app, was developed by former Automattic CEO Toni Schneider. Schneider stepped down as chief executive officer in January to let founder Matt Mullenweg take the reins. Since then he’s been working on new products with a very small team of six, informally known as the “tinker team” to experiment with fun, one-off concepts proposed in company-wide brainstorming sessions – Selfies is the result.

The app is extremely simple to get into. Within seconds of starting up the app for the first time you’re taking a pic, adding a caption and filter, and posting to the network. At the moment there’s a single, public stream of selfies in the app, and you can respond to selfies with a captioned image of your own, almost similar to Snapchat or Slingshot.

So, get your duck face on and check out Selfies. It’s free and available in Google Play for devices running Android 4.0.3 and above.

The app was not found in the store. 🙁

Are you a selfie addict? Would you consider downloading and using Selfies?
