After launching in November last year, the Motorola Moto G became the best selling phone for Motorola, so it’s only natural that Motorola is working on a successor, most likely due to launch around the same time as the original did last year. It seems that Motorola are pretty far along with testing the new phone with a new entry appearing in GFXBench claiming to be the Motorola Moto G2 – or at least the XT1063.
The Moto G is listed under model # X1032, and if this entry is the Moto G2, then it will be the XT1063, but like anything, there’s no guarantees till it launches. The phone in GFXBench lists specs that would make for a respectable, though minor update to the Moto G.
As you can see if this is indeed the Moto G2, the phone will retain the same 720P display but increasing the display size from 4.5″ to 5″, it will also come with the same 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB RAM. There is an update on the camera front, with the rear camera increasing in resolution from 5MP to 7MP and the 1.3MP Front-facing camera will see selfie addicts satisfied with a bump to 2MP.
Software wise, the phone will come – at this stage – with Android 4.4.4, but with an expected November release date looming for Android L, and Motorola’s responsive moves towards delivering updates to their handsets, it wouldn’t be too far out there to expect the G2 to launch with Android L.
Seems the Moto G2 could be a simple update on some basics like the screen size and cameras, but then again, it’s conceivable that someone has faked the entry in GFXBench too. We’re still some ways out from any announcement so we’ll have to stay tuned for more details as the year progresses.
It’s nice to see the gyros and accelerometers make an appearance – kind of key that they be there.
Also no mention of if it’s 3G or 4G (4G would make sense). I’d assume the SD slot would be the norm as well.
If this is right, I think Moto are losing their touch. 5″ is too big for this phone, it reduces the sharpness of the screen and decreases battery life for no real gain.
The only thing that sucks on the Moto G is the RAM, 1GB is just not enough. Give me the Moto G slightly upgraded with 2GB of RAM and you have the perfect phone.
1gb is fine. Are you doing heavy photo shopping on your phone? Kitkat and beyond is designed for lower end phones. Who wants to max out the performance on a sub $300 phone anyway? This phone isn’t meant for a hard core Android enthusiast.
1Gb RAM on a mid level device is indeed viable.
What isn’t, is the storage capacity. 8Gb is nowhere near enough.
8GB will be the base model, there will be a 16GB model, just like the current Moto G. So don’t panic.
1GB of RAM is viable, I never claimed it wasn’t, but it’s by far the biggest issue with this phone.
Have you used a Moto G? I use one daily.
KitKat might be designed for low memory footprint, but apps are not. The end result: multitasking just doesn’t work. Every time you switch between apps, they have to reload, and you lose whatever you were doing.
It doesn’t take photo editing, just the web browser. Use a Moto G for a month and you’ll see that 1GB RAM is the biggest problem with this phone.
What mobile browser do you use on the phone? Chrome is a massive resource hog. There are alternative browsers out there that do a better job.
But you said “This phone isn’t meant for a hard core Android enthusiast.” And now you’re telling me I should change my default browser? But yes, I have tried changing my browser. Browsers are all resource hogs, it’s the nature of web browsing.
Android is a completely different experience with 2GB RAM as opposed to 1GB RAM. No other spec jump would have anywhere near as much impact to improve the usability of the Moto G as this.
I think you’re asking for too much for the price that you pay. It really is a cheap device.
How much could an extra 1gb of RAM cost, compared to an extra half inch of screen or 2mp on the camera?
The extra RAM would go much further towards improving the experience of this phone than any other change they could make.
It’s not asking much, one year after the original release of the phone, there’s no reason they can’t upgrade!
Yeah but to do that as you’ve said they’d have to cut out something to keep it at the same price. Like the front facing camera or something.
