Galaxy Alpha
Samsung has just announced the much hyped Galaxy Alpha, with a metal frame and a solid finish calling it ‘the evolution of Galaxy Design’.

The phone is made from plastic, featuring the same dimpled rear that was introduced on the Galaxy S5, but comes with a first for Galaxy Phones – a Metal frame. The phone takes Samsung to a new place with their design aesthetics, but still offers the familiar look and feel of a Galaxy phone. While they’re now offering a metal frame, the Galaxy Alpha still retains the same familiar dimpled plastic rear that was shown off on the Galaxy S5. It’s a slim device too, at just 7mm it’s one of the slimmest Galaxy phones they’ve produced and at just 115 grams, it’s light too.

It’s a fairly lightweight, or Mid-range handset when it comes to specs though, with a 720P resolution screen, but it has an Octa-Core processor, most likely an in-house Exynos processor and 2GB of RAM included. There’s 32GB of on-board storage, although surprisingly, there’s no microSD card reader to expand this, something a number of people find to be a must-have feature.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Specs:

  • 4.7” HD Super AMOLED (1280 x 720)
  • Octa Core (Quad 1.8GHz + Quad 1.3GHz)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB on-board Storage **No micro SD Slot**
  • 12MP (rear) + 2.1MP (front)
  • WiFi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac HT80, MIMO(2×2), Bluetooth 4.0 BLE / ANT+, NFC
  • Accelerometer, Gyro Sensor, Geomagnetic Sensor, Hall Sensor,
Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor ,Gesture Sensor, Fingerprint
    Sensor, HR Sensor
  • Android 4.4.4 (KitKat)
  • 132.4×65.5×6.7 mm @ 115grams
  • 1,860 mAh Battery

The phone will be available to order from September, although which markets has not been announced. Samsung has advised a European price of €599, but local availability in Australia has not been announced. The Galaxy Alpha will be available in a similar colour selection to the Galaxy S5 at launch: Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue, although the availability will be based on markets.

We’ve reached out to Samsung Australia for more information on the phone and whether we’ll see the phone launch here at all.

What are your thoughts on the Galaxy Alpha?

Oh c’mon Samsung. Is that really the best you could come up with? I appreciate the effort to produce something with higher quality materials, but the likeness to iPhone with chamfered edges is plain embarrassing. The phrase ‘iPhone envy’ leaps to mind.

And why does it still have those horrible dimpled plastic backings? Before I thought Samsung’s cheap-looking designs were solely to save costs, but now I’m wondering if they even know what good design is.

If Samsung did this with an SD slot, and did a GPE ROM for it, it’d be worth looking at getting.

Is it waterproof?

It would be nice in the hand.
But pretty average specs in what seems to be an expensive handset. Hang on, it is an iPhone clone!!

Samsung gs2 copy

I agree, it does look like the Galaxy S2.
Lucky for samsung, the GS2 was a great phone, I know a lot of people who prefer the shape and size of the S2 over the S3/4/5, myself included.

I thought the iPhone 6 was going to be announced next month…

Interesting move. Perhaps Samsung are preempting a 4.7 in iPhone?

That looks…….just like an iPhone.

Oh boy.

yeah my thoughts exactly when i saw it its samsung’s take on iphone

It looks like a Galaxy S2
