SanDisk has launched two new flash memory cards, which you’d probably better know as SD Cards or microSD. These aren’t any cards though; they’re world firsts: a 512GB U3-rated SD card, and a 64GB u3-rated microSD. Why are these so amazing? The SD card is marketed as the highest capacity SD card manufactured to date, and the microSD is the fastest microSD available.
Why would you want such a blindingly fast SD card? Simple — if you’re shooting 4K video on a camera, you need a lot of storage space and you need to be able to write to it quickly. However, these cards do come at a professional-level price, starting at $1,550. With that price tag, you get a monster capacity though — the card can hold 14 hours of 4K video, or 48 hours of Full HD, meaning that your battery is likely to give way far before your memory card does.
As for the microSD, this is a mountain of storage that you can fit inside your smartphone, and if you’ve got one of the rare beasts capable of capturing 4K video, you’ve now got somewhere useful to store it. The microSD card is also significantly more affordable, coming in at just $179.
Both cards can transfer data at up to 95 MBps, which is stupidly quick, and so if your data demands are significant, these could be the cards you’re looking for. Both products are expected to be available in Australia from next month (i.e. not long!)
while I initially liked the idea of expandable storage when I moved to android, I’d rather want larger internal storage after 3 Sandisk ultra microSD cards died on me…
And even rarer when you factor in the limited subset of devices Australia is permitted to receive.
even other countries like the US rarely see full range of announced products. I believe Samsung always say 64GB storage is available during launch but you can it’s very rare
Chinese phones are the leaders here. Have a 64gb on its way from HK. Xiaomi and other major players also have these as standard
ya but I’d rather have some known make compared to a phone that has no after-sales support (hardware and software wise). even the custom ROM scene seems “dry” for these Chinese ROMs.
That is why OnePlus is so exciting. Will take a few generations to improve support.
Don’t forget Korean stuff used to be crap and Japanese before that.
