Alongside this morning’s launch of the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung announced an updated version of its well-received Gear VR Innovator Edition.

The existing Gear VR unit is only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4, so a new Gear VR unit is required to be compatible with the new phones.

Daniel went eyes-on with the updated Gear VR in Barcelona, so of course we’ve got a photo of him with a large white box strapped onto his face for everyone to see:

It doesn’t look like too much has changed for the Gear VR. The main change to make it work with the S6 is probably just the black piece to which you connect the phone.

Dan also got a look at a controller for use with Gear VR, although as the controller is just a Bluetooth controller for your phone it doesn’t seem likely that it’s specific to the S6 or the updated Gear VR unit.

Don’t be afraid to try out Gear VR on either device, if given the chance. Ausdroid’s been getting out with the Note 4 version and demonstrating it to anyone who’ll listen. It’s an amazing experience, and if you’ve already got the compatible phone hardware then it’s a good, even cheap, way to get some extra fun out of it, especially with friends.

Prasad Gokhale, Samsung Australia’s Vice President IT & Mobile, offered a statement on Australian availability of the updated Gear VR:

โ€œMobile virtual reality is an immensely exciting category that Samsung continues to explore with the global launch of Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition will deliver a rich and refined virtual reality experience for customers.

Those who have experienced Samsung Gear VR with the Galaxy Note 4 will understand the potential this technology can bring in terms of creating an immersive experience that can completely change the way we interact with digital content.

The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition will be launched in Australia in the coming months. We look forward to sharing more information closer to the launch date.

We imagine Samsung is looking forward to expanding its potential customer base for the Gear VR to include their major flagship phone for the year.

The Gear VR promises to be some of the best fun you can have with the Galaxy S6, and we can’t wait to see it come to market here either.
