Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
It all started with the Xperia Play, Sony’s attempt to leverage their successful Playstation service onto the burgeoning Android eco-system. Sony launched a version of Playstation Mobile with the Xperia Play and over the last several years it’s changed name and intent, but now the ride is over with Sony advising they will shutter the service.

In an announcement on their Playstation Mobile forum, Sony has made the announcement which will see the service end wholly by September this year :

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has announced that PlayStation®Mobile (PSM) will cease distribution of content after July 15, 2015*1 and in-app purchases/re-download of purchased content will be discontinued after September 10, 2015.

In addition, “PlayStation®Mobile for Android,” which allows consumers to access PSM content on a variety of PlayStation®Certified devices, will also be unavailable for download after September 10, 2015.

If you’re an avid Playstation Mobile user with content you wish to keep, you’ll need to make sure you’ve downloaded your content before September 10th.

The service never really took off, with Sony choosing to use their own service to distribute games rather than allow them to be accessed as native apps(Games) through Google Play. If Sony ever decides to make their games available as native applications through Google Play, there’s a large selection I’d be willing to purchase.

Which Sony Playstation games would you like to be able to purchase from Google Play?

That phone looked so cool at the time. It should have been awesome. All it needed was some effort to get it all going. Just completely squandered.

Glad it shuttered in that we may get these games through better distribution channels like Google Play. Although I’d be salty if I had to buy them again after already purchasing through PSM.
