Former Victorian Premier, the Hon. John Brumby, together with Gold Coast SUNS’ Chief Executive, Andrew Travis announced today that Huawei has signed on as the teams official Technology and Ball Partner.

The 5-year deal is Huawei’s second major deal with sports sponsorship, with Huawei already fairly recognisable as a major sponsor of the NRL’s Canberra Raiders. The deal with the Gold Coast Suns will further Huawei’s brand recognition within Australia, with AFL one of the most watched sports in Australia.

Of the deal, Mr Brumby said

Huawei is proud to be announcing its first major sponsorship in AFL. Like the Gold Coast SUNS’ in the AFL, Huawei is relatively young in the Australian ICT & Telecommunications market, but we both continue to build and grow from strength-to-strength. This sponsorship will enable Huawei to further build its consumer brand awareness through the Gold Coast SUNS popularity at home games and television audiences around the country.

Huawei is already the third largest smartphone vendor in the world, behind only Apple and Samsung. The Huawei Mate 7 is their current flagship and has been the star of their other brand recognition effort, the ‘Experiential Zones’ which have popped up at both Westfield Shopping Centres and the Royal Easter Show in Sydney.

It’s a big step for Huawei and will certainly open up recognition in new markets. As the new sponsor, Huawei started with the players on brand recognition, asking them to attempt to pronounce the new sponsors name:

Admit it, you tried to pronounce the name after watching the video. How did you go pronouncing Huawei?
