Sony has announced the next of is 4th generation smartphones, with the advent of the Xperia C4 and Xperia C4 Dual. The headline feature of each is the 5MP front-facing camera, and a run of Xperia camera apps designed to add a bit of fun to your selfies. On top of that, the C4 boasts the same 5.5″ Full HD screen we’ve come to know and love from Sony, as well as a built-in Octa-core processor with heaps of power.

Tony McNulty, Vice President Venue Category Business Management at Sony Mobile had this to say:

Following the success of Xperia C3, we are proud to introduce Sony’s evolved PROselfie smartphone. Xperia C4 caters to consumers that want a smartphone that not only takes great photos, but also packs a punch. Benefiting from Sony’s camera expertise, the 5MP front-facing camera with wide-angle lens lets you capture perfect selfies, while its quality display and performance features provide an all-round advanced smartphone experience.

As you’d expect in a release about a ‘selfie phone’, there’s a lot of focus on that front-facing camera. Sony tells us its a 5MP front camera with a 25mm (equivalent) wide angle lens, which will get you and many of your mates in the shot as well. Paired with Sony’s Exmor R sensor, a soft LED flash and HDR, you’ll be able to capture nice bright and sharp photos in a variety of environments. It’s not clear whether there’s hardware OIS here, but Sony’s SteadyShot software is on hand to help correct for camera shake.

The rear camera isn’t forgotten either, with a 13MP sensor picking up the duties, featuring fairly standard auto-focus, HDR and of course a higher resolution.

Under the hood, Sony has thrown in a 1.7 GHz MediaTek MTK6752 processor; it’s not the most powerful on the market, but it still packs a decent punch. 2GB of RAM and 16GB onboard storage expandable by MicroSD will have you covered, as well as the usual full complement of connectivity and options.

Powering all this is a 2,600 mAh battery, and given what wizardry Sony has conjured from other batteries of similar size, there’s little doubt that the Xperia C4 range could easily kick on for a couple of days.

The Xperia C4 could well present an excellent mid-range choice for mobiles in 2015, and we’ll be in touch with Sony as soon as we can to get our hands on one to take for a spin. Once we know more about Australian pricing and availability, of course we’ll let you know!

Update:
Sony Mobile Australia has contacted us this morning to advise that the C4 will be coming here with more details on pricing and availability to be announced in the coming weeks.

What do you think? Are you taken with the Xperia C4?
