Hands up – who’s surprised that there’s a Galaxy S6 Active coming? Nope, neither am I. After seeing the usual early blurry cam, to press renders and leaked print ads in the US, Samsung’s now made it official – the Galaxy S6 Active is real, it exists, and it’s currently exclusive to US carrier AT&T, who even placed an advert on their YouTube channel.

Given some of the information thats already come out, the specs shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to anyone either

  • 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED Display
  • 16MP rear-facing camera, 5MP front-facing camera
  • Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor
  • 32GB Storage, 3GB RAM
  • 3500mAh battery with support for wireless and fast charging
  • IP68 water and dust resistance rating

It looks like the S6 Active will keep the S6’s impressive camera, and the bulk of its internals. Notably absent is the fingerprint scanner, unsurprising giventhe Active series’ reworked button configuration. Battery capacity is interesting, though – at 3500mAh the S6 Active has a 950mAh higher capacity than the standard Galaxy S6 which would please a lot of users, if they hadn’t already bought themselves a Galaxy S6.

We’re also not sure how much thicker it is than the Galaxy S6’s standard slim profile, or how much heavier it’ll be. With the S6 Active’s rugged appearance though, it looks like it’s ready for anything, and we can expect it to be a little thicker and heavier to accomodate the IP rating and extra battery capacity.

Unfortunately, given the history of the active range of devices, it’s not certain whether we’ll see it in Australia. Samsung’s announced that the S6 Active is exclusive to AT&T but hasn’t really specified whether that’s worldwide or US exclusivity. While we did see the S4 Active in Australia, we didn’t see the S5 Active, which was similarly AT&T-bound.

With the standard Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge lacking the IP rating of the Active along with the extra battery capacity, we’d like to think there’ll be a market for the S6 Active in Australia. Hopefully Samsung will look at bringing the phone to our shores soon.

Update (11/06):
Samsung Australia have replied regarding possible availability of the Galaxy S6 Active in Australia, stating :

As with any new product, Samsung Electronics Australia will examine the local market to assess if the Galaxy S6 Active will be introduced in Australia. We will share more information if there are any updates.

We’ll keep an eye on the market and see what happens with this one.

Would you like to see the S6 Active come to Australia? What features would seal the deal for your purchase? Tell us in the comments!

Sounds like lip service from Samsung. They should have already done the assessment, after all, every man and his ol’ brown dog has know the Active was in the pipeline for some time now.
As for seal the deal, 3500mAh battery, FM and/or DAB+ Radio and a SD Card slot. If it is just the battery then it’s a case of see what else is available.
No use them faffing about for a month or three, announce it or forget it.

Least its got a decent battery, which means its worth considering if they get the thing here asap.
