Motorola announced their local plans for their new Moto G and X range on Monday, and today we can reveal the outright pricing for the flagship of the range, the Moto X Style.
The feedback we’ve heard from you, our audience, has been loud and clear — you want to be able to get this handset outright, and we can confirm exclusively that this will be an option for you. At this stage, the outright purchase price will be $792 from Vodafone stores, and for that price the handset comes unlocked, contract free, and without any Vodafone software installed (which won’t be on the contracted handsets either, just FYI).
For those not quite familiar, or who need some prompting, the Moto X Style is bound to be a true flagship killer. Boasting specs such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 running at 1.8 GHz (the same chip as the LG G4), 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage expandable by MicroSD, paired with a 21MP rear camera with Sony sensor, and 5MP front-facing camera, there’s really nothing that the Moto X Style doesn’t have… well, except wireless charging, but we can forgive them that.
All this will be powered by a 3,000 mAh battery which is almost certain to see a full day’s usage under moderate to heavy use, and well over a day for everyone else.
We can’t wait to see the Moto X Style hit shelves in a couple of weeks, and we’re betting you probably can’t either. Keep an eye out, we’re going to work on a wrap on availability for those who want to obtain the new Moto range elsewhere!

I don’t doubt you at all Chris 🙂 I tried to take up the offer when it was still current only to be refused at several Vodafone stores so I lodged a complaint directly to Vodafone and their response was as above clearly denying any knowledge of your report. Like I said I missed the opportunity to get this phone because several of the Vodafone stores said they can’t sell it outright. Personally I think it’s to Motorola’s detriment to have this association with Vodafone.
So I went to several Vodafone store the past few days and they all denied the phone was for sale outright. None of the staff would even bother to call Head Office and had no interest in reading this article. Looks like I’ll wait for another brand then
Truly wish people would stop trying to call any one phone a “flagship killer” when they all use variations of exactly the same hardware. With any flagships these days the only thing that differentiates from any of the other ones is the ROM the company uses and the style/design of the phone. Only $399 in America, what is this price?
$399 is for the 16GB model. Not 32GB, which is $449.
$449 USD is $632.97 AUD at today’s exchange rate.
Add on GST and it becomes $696 something, so call it $699.
Factor in added warranty costs for Australia, local support and contingencies, and a bit of a hedge on ForEx movement (which any large manufacturer/importer will be doing), and that price is probably around the $730-740 mark.
It’s a bit overpriced, but not as much as what you’re making out with a simple “It’s $399 in the US!!!!” comment. Be informed. Make a good argument.
Simply cannot see the point of this over the LG G4, which has very similar specs, has been out for a while, and can be had for ~$550 and falling.
$792 is massively too expensive for what it is.
I saw the LG G4 still at $792 outright at Optus today. No explanation as to why they were charging so much for a 16gb version of the G4 when I showed them the Kogan website listing the 32gb version for $639.
I’ll pay $650 or so for a 32gb Moto X Style. I definitely will not support such price gouging by Vodaphone. It may very well be reportable to the ombudsman as this kind of markup is outrageous, especially if it is exclusive to Vodaphone.

For the X Style? No, not yet. The release date will be ‘soon’, within September. We’re chasing this information and will let you guys know as soon as we do.
Thanks for that update. You’d think Moto would have an accurate release date on their website by now, and Vodafone would have something on their website at all. I’m starting to think “here we go again” with Moto delays…

Will not pay more than the Nexus 6 price, end of story. Sick of silly markups. Moto making best Android phones butif I get this its going to be bought off the net.
But the Nexus 6 is such a crap phone by comparison to the Moto X Play / Style. These two handsets are seriously brilliant.
What makes you say that? I’ve got the device and is by far and away the best phone I’ve ever had. Neither of those are guaranteed to receive Android updates like a Nexus.
Chris has his opinions (we’re all entitled to them). I have the Nexus 6 and after using it for 6 months find it too large for my liking, it’s also a little too plasticky(?) for my tastes. If you’re happy with your Nexus 6 that’s great, we all love our phones for different reasons. As above, of course everyone’s entitled to their opinions. As mentioned hand feel is very subjective. I’m sure both phones will be really really good, unfortunately in Australia they’ve been priced quite high and exclusive to Vodafone.
I’m fairly sure that the Moto devices will see Android updates fairly quickly, and probably faster than HTC, Samsung, LG or other handsets .. though perhaps not as fast as the Nexus. What’s wrong with the Nexus 6? Crap battery, too big, too plasticky and cheap feeling, ordinary camera…. need I go on? 🙂
Plus, unlike most others, I’ve had a lot of hands on time with the Nexus 6, Moto X Style and Moto X Play (and Moto G 3rd for that matter), so I think I’m fairly well placed to compare them.

I’m not sure you’ve even used this phone, the battery is good for a day with plenty of use. Your claiming access to phones pre launch but that doesn’t make you as subject matter expert and there is no way of verifying your claims. It’s not too big, it’s too big for you. I’ve no problem with its size and your next claim that it “feels cheap” is again subjective. The RRP US$399 is for 16GB variant, and without tax. I reckon the 32GB variant would be around US$459 – US$499 which would translate into AU$633.73 – AU$688.96 + tax = AU$697.1 – AU$757.86. That’s not very far-fetch from the listed price AU$792 including tax, considering logistics cost to Australia, but why would there be always Australia tax on everything? 🙁
I wouldn’t call a $40 premium much of an Australia tax to be honest; that figure could be easily explained by the additional 12 months warranty coverage and associated cost, Motorola hedging a bit on foreign exchange for service costs, and bam, you’re basically at parity.

This is really weird. Every review i’ve seen of this phone says that its meant to be a mid priced flag ship, not one of the most expensive phones to hit the market. Why is it so damn expensive here when i can buy it unlocked from the states for 200 bucks less?

$792 is either a huge misstep on the part of Vodafone and Motorola, or they’re both planing for a massive profit margin on this phone. Even if you factor in exchange rates, gst and shipping it shouldn’t come anywhere close to that. You can import a Moto-Maker customised one yourself from the US for almost $150 less using the Australia Post parcel forwarding service.
Have you done this? I think you will run into dramas. You cannot pay for it with an Australian Credit Card. I tried last year and my order got flagged then cancelled a day later. I ended up paying $820aud delivered for a 32gb with moto maker from ebay. $792 for a phone with those specs on release day is a steal. Fair enough I’ve never actually imported one from their website. I really do want the moto x style but at $792 there’s no value there. Not when you consider it’s $400 USD. The s6 and g4 are roughly the same price overseas once you take currency conversions into account. I can get a g4 for about 650 AUD delivered off ebay atm. Definitely going to make me think long and hard about a Motorola handset this year

I also tried buying from Motorola US Moto Maker last week, my order went thru successful, only to check the next day to be put on hold & cancelled.? My custom one went for $524.99US, which is ~$722.35 Australian Dollars for the 64GB, not counting shipping, but I’d pay an extra $100 for shipping & it’d still be cheaper than Vodafone-AU’s $816 for the 32GB outright price.!!

I’d like to know where the $200 mark up comes into play for australia? and don’t say its because it has to be shipped here….because its coming from asia which is a lot closer than continental US and already has well established shipping lanes.

For me the big thing is the LTE support this has – it supports every band you could possibly want – LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 17(700), 20(800), 25(1900), 28(700), 29(700), 40(2300), 41(2500)

The grass is greener than the other side. The Nexus 6 has OLED 1440p screen and people have been reporting screen burning issue, and they wish if only it were LCD instead.
That’s a pretty good price for a phone with those specs. The X Play would do me fine though.
