ZTE Boost INDY & Telstra Smart Black Banner

ZTE Australia has added two new mobile phones to its line up of Australian devices, as Boost and Telstra prepaid offerings.

The two mobile phones, which are the Boost INDY (ZTE B816) and the Telstra Smart Plus (ZTE T816), aren’t going to win any awards nor are they really anything special. They’re destined for prepaid, with the devices quietly added to the ZTE Mobiles, Telstra and Boost websites.

Boost INDY (ZTE B816)

The Boost INDY is a basic smartphone that only supports Boost/Telstra Next G 3G network and spec wise isn’t anything special. The full list of specs include:

  • 4.0″ TFT WVGA Display (854 x 480)
  • 1.0GHz dual core ARM Cortex A7 CPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB (with 2GB user space available), expandable to 32GB via microSD
  • 2MP Rear Camera, VGA front facing
  • Android 4.4 (KitKat)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0, GPS
  • 1200 mAh Li-ion Replaceable Battery
  • Network Connectivity:
    • 2G: 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
    • 3G: 850, 2100 MHz
  • Dimensions: 125 x 64 x 9.8mm. 123g

As stated, spec wise there really isn’t anything remarkable but considering its a $50 phone, it could be a lot worse. We’re really seeing that bottom end of feature-phones being pushed away in favour of low-end Androids, and that can only be a good thing for new entrants to the mobile market.

The Boost INDY (ZTE B816) is available now through the Boost website and Boost resellers for $49.

Telstra Smart Plus Black (ZTE T816)

The last mobile ZTE has added is the Telstra Smart Plus Black (ZTE T816), which again is nothing really special or fantastic spec wise. The full list of specs include:

  • 4.0″ TFT WVGA Display (800×480)
  • 1.0GHz dual core ARM Cortex A7 CPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB Memory (with 2GB user space available) expandable to 32GB via microSD
  • 2MP Rear Camera, VGA front facing
  • Android 4.4 (KitKat)
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0, GPS
  • 1200 mAh Li-ion replaceable battery
  • Network Connectivity:
    • 2G: 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
    • 3G: 850, 2100 MHz
  • Dimensions: 125 x 64 x 9.8mm. 123g

The astute will notice that it’s exactly the same phone as the Boost Indy, with a different model number (the T indicating that it’s for Telstra, not B for Boost). Again, at $49 it’s a cheap smartphone to get started with on Telstra pre-paid, and its available now through both the Telstra pre-paid website or your local Telstra store for $49.

Can you use Boost phones with a Telstra SIM and vice-versa? thanks! 🙂

Alex D

Personally I have tried this and it can at time work (simply because Boost/Telstra are the same company) but you might want to air on the side of caution!

I” sure you don’t need this info now, but in case someone stumbles on this, it is technically boost locked, but my Aldi mobile sim (that also uses Telstra) works fine in it.

It’s currently $19 in Coles so even if you can only use boost/Telstra/Aldi it’s probably worth it. I guess to unlock would cost more than the phone, but at $19 it’s basically disposable lol

They both look like the same phone with the only difference being the T or B in the model number. Can anyone tell me if ZTE are worth buying? Thinking of getting one of these for my 12yo daughter.

Alex D

They’re not to bad for a 12 y/o. I mean you wouldn’t want to get them anything more expensive. Considering they run stock Android, they are very user friendly.

You guys are posting a lot about ZTE junk phones a lot recently… Should anyone really buy these phones…? Probably not. Is it just a slow news day or are they a sponsor?

Alex D

ZTE is not a sponsor and we understand that not everyone can afford even mid range or high end phones. We are an Android community based news site, hence why we post about anything Android related regardless if it might be junk to you but to others might be useful information.
