Owners of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S 8.4 can expect a firmware update for their tablet to Android 5.0.2 soon.

The update, which is slowly beginning to trickle out to user both via Kies and OTA, brings the first version of the Galaxy Tab S to Lollipop, but not the latest 5.1.1 release, nor to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The update is 938MB and according to the log requires up to 3GB of available memory to install. Furthermore the update brings along with it:

  • Multi-Window capability
  • “Quick Settings” updated
  • Additional animations
  • Improved notifications
  • Device Protection
  • Stagefright security update

The update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop is certainly overdue, given other markets have had the update pushed through back in early June. Though as they say, better late than never.

As stated the update has only begun rolling out and if your a little impatient you can try to hook your Tab S to Kies and see if the update is available that way, otherwise you can go to SamMobile via this link to download the ZIP file for the update. Do bear in mind, this update is for the Galaxy TabS 8.4 LTE, model number SM-T705Y and not for other Galaxy TabS tablets at this stage.

I got my Telstra LTE 5.0.1 update for the Tab S 10.5″ a good 3-4 weeks ago (I think!). Although literally just been prompted with another new update which is currently installing. Freaky timing.

Not sure this update is worth is. I ran the 5.0.1 update when it was released overseas and my battery was crap, and the screen kept getting flashes. I took it to the samsung experience store and the put pre lollipop back on it and now all os good again. I will stay with pre lollipop and live with the stagefright bug.

The WifFi only version of the Tab S 8.4 and 10.5 had their Australian upgrades to 5.0.2 in July and October respectively. I thought that was very late but to realise that LTE versions still hadn’t got theirs is awful. Samsung really don’t seem to care about updates and the Australian operation appears to be particularly slow!

Still no update for Galaxy Tab 4 8.0″

nor for the 7 inch version. Samsung really don’t seem to care about software updates.
