Following the FAA’s move to ban Samsung’s troubled phone from American flights, Australia’s flag carrier has taken its own steps to ban all passengers from carrying the Galaxy Note 7 on any Qantas or Jetstar flights from midnight on 15 October 2016. Virgin Australia have followed making a similar announcement. We’ve got the two travel advisories below.
In a statement released this afternoon, Qantas advised:
Qantas and Jetstar customers are advised that the carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices on-board is prohibited on ALL FLIGHTS effective 12:01am (AEDT) Sunday 16 October 2016. This is due to concerns regarding potential fire risk from the device’s battery after a number of incidents worldwide and follows a ban put in place by regulators overseas. The ban applies to devices being carried onto the aircraft, in carry-on baggage as well as check-in luggage. Other Samsung devices are not affected.
Note: this is updated advice from the previous Qantas Group policy, which allowed carriage of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 provided it was turned off. This restriction has now been broadened to a total ban.
Virgin Australia has announced a similar move this evening, confirming:
Total ban on Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices
From Sunday 16 October 2016, Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices can no longer be carried on Virgin Australia flights.
This is due to safety concerns around the device and follows the implementation of a ban by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Effective 12:01am AEDT on Sunday 16 October, guests travelling on Virgin Australia services must comply with this ban by not travelling with this device, whether on their person, in their carry on luggage or in a checked bag.
The use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices is currently prohibited on all Virgin Australia flights, and the complete ban announced today is an additional safety measure.
We apologise for any inconvenience to our guests, but safety is always our number one priority.
Of course, as the phones have been recalled, you shouldn’t really be using them anyway. Take them back and return them, people.

The reality is no one should have them any more, they should have been returned. This is just the airlines jumping on the bandwagon to get free press.

Well Yeah, I agree to a point, they have the best cameras and hardware atm but Google are trying to change that. Btw my S7 edge Google keyboard is laggy as dog poo as I type this.
I use SwiftKey, give that a shot. I find it the best out of the bunch.
Their cameras are up there with HTC and Sony, just below the unreleased pixel line.
Not sure what is up with your Google keyboard. Mine runs flawlessly on much lesser 3 year old hardware (soon to be replaced – woo!)
