It’s hard to believe it’s already been one year since Pokémon GO launched the globally frenzied GPS-based game to our smart devices, but it has been that long, and in that time Niantic’s game has seen some 750 million downloads worldwide, and to celebrate, Niantic and The Pokémon Team are cooking up some fun.

The Pokémon Team have taken to their blog to announce that over next few months, the app game will be hosting some real-world and in-game events, alongside introduction of new features that will debut in the app during this celebrational time.

To help kick things off, there will be a Solstice Event starting on June 13, 2017, featuring Fire-type and Ice-type Pokémon along with huge XP bonuses for throwing Poké Balls accurately, and discounted Lucky Eggs in the in-game shop.

Just after the Solstice Event, Pokémon and Niantic have said there will be an app update which will bring new features around collaborative group gameplay features. However, to bring these new features, Niantic has said that they will be temporarily disabling Gyms for a short period of time within the app. It’s unknown when, or for how long, this will occur.

These in-game events will be joined by a number of real world events, to be held from July onwards in the US and in Japan, but there’s no details at this stage of any local real-world events in Australia.
