Film and camera buffs will be intimately familiar with the name RED when it comes to cameras, but it’s a bit of a surprise to learn they’ve just announced a new Android phone is now available to pre-order.
The RED Hydrogen One is a phone that, if the quality of their cameras and the price of the pre-orders is anything to go by, should be quite the premium device. The phone is available in both Aluminium and Titanium bodies, but it’s the mention of a ‘Holographic’ display that’s caught our attention.
According to RED the 5.7″ Hydrogen holographic display will show your 2D content normally, however it will display 3D content in a holographic display:
This incredible retina-riveting display advancement features nanotechnology that seamlessly switches between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content and interactive games…both landscape and portrait modes supported.
The marketing speak for the RED Hydrogen One doesn’t stop there with the company also talking about modularity. According to their
release, the phone will:
incorporates a new high speed data bus to enable a comprehensive and ever expanding modular component system, which will include future attachments for shooting higher quality motion and still images as well as HYDROGEN format holographic images.
The video capture will be augmented by a H30 algorithm, which will be able to convert ‘stereo sound into expansive multi-dimensional audio.’
What else is in the phone? No idea. It’s going to have a USB-C port, a microSD port for expanding storage and a headphone jack.
Whether all that will get you to plonk down $1,195USD for an aluminium model or $1,595USD for a titanium model – both prices are sans tax and shipping – which won’t arrive till Q1 2018 is another story. They are listing Australia in the countries you can choose to ship to though.

It’s a little out of my price range, but if I could justify spending this much on a smartphone, I would without a second thought…
Say what you will, but in my opinion holographic technologies are the future of 3D – I firmly believe that one day, we’ll be watching holographic content at home,, having holographic telephone calls and holographic gaming.
