Niantic Labs has announced overnight that as part of their Pokémon Go one-year anniversary celebrations they’ll finally be unleashing the legendary Pokemon we’ve all been waiting for.

It’s not happening automatically though, with a worldwide co-operation required to unlock the Legendary Pokemon. Niantic says :

On July 22, thousands of Trainers in Grant Park for Pokémon GO Fest and the millions of others around the world will be working together to unlock in-game bonuses for the entire Pokémon GO community. If they manage to catch enough Pokémon during the Pokémon GO Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokémon will be revealed in Grant Park. If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary Pokémon, that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokémon GO Fest.

According to Niantic, if the Legendary Pokémon are unlocked, they will be released through the new Gym system that was launched last month. Legendary Pokémon will appear as Legendary Eggs at Gyms, if raiding parties can defeat the hatched Legendary raid boss, then they will have a chance to catch the Legendary Pokémon.

If you catch a Legendary Pokémon, you can use it to battle other Pokémon in gyms, but unfortunately won’t be able to leave it at a gym to defend it – because that would lead us back to the old days of having gyms that are impossible to take down.

A teaser trailer has been released showing off a number of Legendary Pokémon including Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Lugia, Ho-oh and even Mewtwo

If you’re up for it, the raids should start around 1am AEST on July 23rd here in Australia so if you’re a night owl and want to help unlock Legendary Pokémon then grab some fellow trainers and head to your favourite local Pokémon gym to see if a Legendary egg appears.
