The Android O Developer Preview 4 drop this morning has certainly increased anticipation for the final release of Android version 8 (Oatmeal Cookie? Oreo? Orange?), and one of the things we get in a new version of Android is a new easter egg which is now included in Dev Preview 4.

Accessing the easter egg is easy, just jump into Settings > System > About Phone. Then tap the Android Version number repeatedly (quickly) and you’ll get the Android O icon (the bright yellow circles). Once you’re at the Android O icon, tap the centre repeatedly a few times and then long press to bring up the latest Easter egg. The latest easter egg is an Octopus floating around the screen – so much symbolism here: 8 legs = Android version 8, Octopus = Android O. You can let the Octopus float and he’ll bounce off the sides or you can drag it around with your finger.

Don’t have Dev Preview 4? Here’s what it looks like:

The Easter eggs in Android have a long history dating back to the Zombie easter egg included in the Gingerbread release of Android. Why does Google include them? Because they’re fun and Googlers generally like to include fun things in their projects. Keep it up Google, we like the fun things you do.

What have you found new in Dev Preview 4?

I thought Android versions were named after desserts. The last time I looked, Octopus was not a dessert.

This is not the final release.
