Optus has continued with its own “X” branded line up of devices with the Optus X Play being quietly added to the telcos website for $59.

Spec wise, the Optus X Play isn’t a device that will win awards anytime soon but for those who might be after a spare device or a basic first smartphone for the kids then the X Play could be the device you’re quite possibly looking for.

As with all the Optus ‘X’ branded phones we’ve seen so far, the X Play is a rebadged phone, with the Alcatel Pixi (4) taking the honours this time. Under the hood you’ll find decentish hardware:

It is a little disappointing that the X Play is only 3G enabled and not able to support any 4G bands but given some parts of Australia are still yet to see this technology rolled out, it’s a cheap option for people upgrading from the recently retired 2G network.

It is also disappointing that the device does only come with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) instead of Android 7.0 (Nougat) which is now over a year old. An update to Android 8.0 (Oreo) would be something we don’t forsee in this devices future – but we could (and would love to) be wrong.

As stated the Optus X Play is available either through your local Optus store or through through the Optus Pre-Paid websitefor $59. Also as a reminder that the device is locked to the Optus network and unlocking fees apply and you will need to contact Optus directly to find out more about the network unlocking fee.
