As they teased last night, Google has remained true to their word and released the final build of Android 8.1 this morning with Factory Images and OTA files now available to download for supported Nexus and Pixel devices.

The update brings a number of new changes for both Nexus and Pixel devices. Older Nexus and Pixel devices which includes the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P and Pixel C will note the new Pixel launcher experience which includes the new ‘At a Glance’ widget, as well as the newly repositioned Search Bar beneath the dock. Pixel 2 owners will get the full effect of the Pixel Visual Core for enhanced photos.

All users will enjoy the benefits of an actual Oreo easter egg, as well as the fixed Cheeseburger, Beer and Swiss Cheese emoji which have all been tweaked to look a little more ‘real’.

The Over The Air updates haven’t started rolling out as yet, at least to anyone we can see, but the OTA images for the Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL, Pixel/Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X are live now. Android Police are reporting that factory images are failing from Beta to 8.1 proper thanks to an older build date.

If you want to try it out you can download the Factory Images from the Google Images page, or the OTAs from that side of the site as well.

I joined the Android Beta program last night and at 12.05am this morning I did a software update check on my Nexus 6P and after an 895MB download I now have 8.1 on my phone. Now I need to watch one of those Youtube “Top 5 features of Android 8.1” to find out why I wanted to do this!!

So are you on the beta 8.1 or the standard 8.1 OTA?
