It’s the first month of 2018, and that means Google has some Android security fixes as well as OTA and Factory images for supported Nexus and Pixel devices.

The bulletin itself is lists Common Vulnerability and Exposures that have been discovered affecting both Android as well as Google devices. There’s fixes for Nvidia, Mediatek, Qualcomm and Kernel vulnerabilities discovered in the past 30 days. The update is, as usual, split into two levels – 1st and 5th of January.

The update for Google devices includes the January 5th Security update, and according to Google the OTA update will begin rolling out from today, with the full rollout expected to take ‘about one and a half calendar weeks for the OTA to reach every Nexus device’.

If you’re not willing to wait, the Google Software page has the Factory Image or OTA files available for you to flash to your supported device.

Excuse me if this is a silly question but does my N6P have to be rooted to be able to download and flash a factory image?

Well I hope the fix the performance issues bundled in Android 8. My trusty Nexus 5X has been close to unusable ever since it received the first update to 8.

If only ‘Check for update’ worked.
