Not content with launching a bevy of new phones at Mobile World Congress, Nokia today took to the stage in China to launch the company’s latest effort, the Nokia X6. It’s a midrange phone with a high-end finish, and looks set to make a good case for itself in the market.
Let’s get it out of the way, first up – the Nokia X6 has a notch atop its display. Like it or loathe it, that design tick is here to stay. Otherwise, the phone features a 5.8-inch screen with a 19:9 Full HD+ (2280 x 1080) resolution. There’s a small bezel at the bottom of the display too that carries a subtle Nokia branding.
The Nokia X6 has a glass rear and metal body, representing yet another upgrade of the Nokia phone design language under HMD Global. At the rate at which Nokia’s industrial design is evolving, Nokia’s industrial design could well be leading the industry this time next year. You’ll find Corning Gorilla Glass on the front, and hopefully on the back too though it’s not entirely clear.
Behind the scenes, there’s a Qualcomm, Snapdragon 636 chipset paired with 4GB RAM and 16/32GB ROM, and a 6GB option is available with 64GB of storage. Both models feature MicroSD-expandable storage.
The phone features a dual camera array at the rear, with a 16MP autofocus f/2.0 camera and a 5MP black and white sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. Nokia is specifically calling out the HDR feature on the phone, along with “AI” features like portrait stage lighting effects, background blur and facial recognition to enhance your photos in software on-device. It also keeps the “Bothie” mode introduced in the Nokia 7 that allows you to do a split-screen video using both the front and rear cameras.
Powering it all, there’s a modest 3,060mAh battery. With a FHD screen resolution and a Snapdragon 6xx series processor, we don’t think this will have any trouble serving your needs throughout the day. If you need to charge though, the phone supports USB-C fast charging to deliver 50% charge in just 30 minutes.
The Nokia X6 looks to be available in Black, White and Blue models – the colour defines the rear glass finish, you’ll always get black on the front. Chinese pricing starts at ¥1299, which is about AU$270 (presumably that’s the 16GB storage model).
It’s not known whether Nokia will bring the X6 to Australia yet – the company has just finished launching its current range of phones here though, so if it’s coming here we might just have to wait a while. One thing’s for sure though – this phone certainly looks the goods at a bargain price.
