This past week saw a few interesting changes in the world of mobile data. Telstra introduced the ‘Piece of Mind Data’ speed limit for postpaid plans, while Vodafone added ‘Passes’, a way for customers to pay extra for unmetered data on specific services like Netflix.

In both cases, you’re paying more to avoid getting stung by excess fees. Peace of Mind Data is typically a plan bolt-on that costs $10 per month to have Telstra throttle the speed of your data service when you reach your limit, rather than charge you for extra data. Vodafone Passes cost between $5 to $15 per month but also mean you won’t blow your data allowance streaming videos or music.

These aren’t bad developments, but for the most part, we believe that right-sizing your phone plan is still a better option. Data is always cheaper when you pay for it in advance, and if you know you’ve got the right amount of data for your usage, you don’t need to worry about add-ons.

To help you get a plan that’s right for you, we’ve taken a look at some great SIM-only options across a whole range of data points.

Plans with at least 20GB

So there’s lots to unwrap here. Think Mobile’s recent plan refresh means you can get 20GB for $30 per month on the Vodafone network, which is a hell of a bargain. If that’s not enough data, $40 per month will get you 30GB on Optus and Vodafone. The Optus offer does however include an Optus Sport subscription and data-free streaming on select services, while Vodafone gets you $5 per day roaming.

And if you need ~even more~ data, Think Mobile inclusions go as high as 80GB for $40 per month.

Plans with at least 10GB

Don’t need quite as much data? You might want to consider TPG who will do 10GB for $15 per month for your first six recharges. You’ll be billed $29.99 per month after your discount runs out, but since it’s a no contract plan, you can leave at any time. Jeenee Mobile is also a top option thanks to its 10GB $22.50 per month plan. You will however need to pay $12.37 upfront.

Plans with at least 1GB

And if all you need is a small plan, there’s plenty of good options too. About $10 for 1GB is the standard, but there’s a few options that are better value. Jeenee Mobile will do 1.2GB for $8.91 per month on a 12-month contract, or SpinTel will do 1.5GB for $9.95 per month with no contract. However, you’ll need to pay setup fees in both cases: $12.37, and $10 upfront, respectively.

Surely it should be common for them to offer a choice, throttle speed or pay extra. Standard choice on any plan.
