Through pure dint of being used by everyone, Messenger is becoming the defacto cross-messaging platform for many. Facebook is responding by consistently adding more features with the latest being Augmented Reality in Messenger video chat.

Facebook is unveiling two games today, which you can play with up to six people at a time – making those group chats even more fun. The games launching today are Don’t Smile and Asteroids Attack, but they’re going to be launching more games including a game called ‘Beach Bump’ which lets you pass a beach ball back and forth and ‘Kitten Kraze’ a matching cat game in the coming weeks and months. The games launching today appear to be a lot of fun:

  • Don’t Smile: Practice your poker face whilst challenging friends to see who can keep a straight face the longest with Don’t Smile – whoever cracks first will see their face morph into a big goofy grin.
  • Asteroids Attack: Ready for an out-of-this-world experience?! Find a funky little spaceship perched on your nose – it’s now your mission to protect the spaceship from pesky asteroids in a chaotic intergalactic space. Move back and forth to swerve around and make sure you unlock the asteroid blaster for an extra boost.

The games will be launching in the latest version of Messenger and once you’re updated it’s easy to load them. To load the games, open a conversation and tap the video icon in the upper right of the screen, then tap the star button and select the AR game. The participant (or participants) in the chat will then get a notification that the game is playing.

Facebook has been building in more and more entertainment options into Messenger recently, they brought live streaming and games to the chat app in December last year and this move adds a new layer to the mix.

The games will be available as soon as you update your app, so make sure you get in on it.
