The teased Nokia launch event has apparently gone ahead with Nokia unveiling not a Nokia 9, but two phones mid-range phones with the Nokia 5.1 Plus and 6.1 Plus announced complete with notches in their screens.

Nokia 5.1 Plus

The Nokia 5.1 Plus is an update to the 5.1 which was announced back in May, with Nokia positioning the handset as ‘The perfect gaming companion’.

The Nokia 5.1 Plus comes with an Octa-core MediaTek Helio processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage which can be bumped up with a microSD card up to 400 GB.

The front of the phone features a HD+ resolution 5.86-inch edge-to-edge 19:9 aspect ratio display with that notch under 2.5D curved glass which extends across the rear as well. The notch contains the 8MP front-facing camera, while the rear of the phone features a dual-sensor array incorporating a 13 MP main camera with 5 MP depth sensor.

Nokia says there is ‘Artificial Intelligence assistance’ built-in to the camera, including a live Bokeh effect which is thanks to the dual rear cameras. Nokia says the AI also extends to the front-facing camera as well.

The Nokia 5.1 Plus is apparently available in three colours – Black, Blue and White which are hard to choose between as they’re all pretty good looking.

You can check out the full specs and features of the Nokia 5.1 Plus on the Nokia website.

Nokia 6.1 Plus

The Nokia 6.1 Plus is a big update for Nokia, building on the launch of the Nokia 6.1 earlier this year at Mobile World Congress.

The front of the phone, which Nokia says has 93% glass surface area features a Full HD+ resolution 5.8-inch 19:9 aspect ratio display covered with Corning Gorilla Glass. The notch is of course a big feature and contains a 16 MP front camera sensor.

Internally, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage which like the 5.1 Plus can also support a microSD card up to 400 GB. A 3060 mAh battery will run the show, with the support for Quick Charge 3.0 included through the USB-C port.

Yes, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack!

The Nokia 6.1 Plus also enjoys AI assist in the camera, as well as HDR support for the dual main camera sensors which include a 16MP sensor with f2.0 aperture and 1.0um pixel size and a secondary 5 MP Black and White sensor with f2.4 aperture and 1.12um pixel size.

The phone comes in two colours – Midnight Blue and Gloss White – though you’d be forgiven for thinking that the blue was black.

You can check out all the features and specs on the Nokia website.

Software

Both the Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus come with Android Oreo under the Android One program for a very stock Android experience. The Android One program allows updates to be delivered to the handset quickly, so expect Android 9 (Pie) to be coming soon.

While Nokia has announced the phones, there’s no word on availability for the handsets though they appear to be going to India first. We’ll check in with Nokia Australia to see if there’s any indication of a local launch.
