This year we have seen several manufacturers operate beta programs for their upcoming software updates. Huawei are now set to join the list with a new beta program starting for their Android 9.0 Pie-based EMUI 9.0.
Huawei is set to announce EMUI 9.0 at IFA 2018 this week, rolling it out to the P20 series of phones in September followed by the Mate 10 line of phones. Aside from these phones it has been unclear which others will be receiving the update in the near future until now.
The new EMUI 9 beta program has begun for the Mate 10, Mate 10 Porsche Design, Mate 10 Pro, Mate RS Porsche Design, P20, P20 Pro, Honor 10, Honor V10, and the Honor Play. It is not a massive list in that most of them are variants of just two phones, the Mate 10 and the P20 but it shows that Huawei are getting serious about providing updates to their users, something they have neglected in the past.
The beta program was announced via Huawei’s Weibo account and is for Chinese users only. To qualify for the program not only do you have to be in China but also have a supported device that is not rooted and sign up for the Huawei Club. The number of beta testers will be limited to 1500 users only and you would imagine this number would be snapped up fairly quickly from the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer.
It is great to see Huawei providing not just beta programs but also relatively quick updates for their latest flagships. Whether this is because Project Treble has made it easier for manufacturers to update or whether manufacturers now realise that users want updates is unclear but in the end the reason is irrelevant. If you own one of the above phones, get set for the EMUI 9 (Android 9.0 Pie) update in the coming months.
